Jared Bednar waited a long time to be in an NHL game. Hell finally get his chance when the Colorado Avalanche open their season against the Dallas Stars.Bednar, a career minor league player and coach, makes his debut behind Colorados bench after his quick hire Aug. 25. Bednar brings championship experience from the minors, winning titles in the AHL and ECHL, but more important for the Avalanche he brings a different style after two disappointing seasons.Bednars system emphasizes speed coupled with an aggressive, pressure game.I have a style of play that I think works in todays NHL game, Bednar told NHL.com. I think we have to be an aggressive team. The game is getting faster every day and I think you have to play an up-tempo style. You have to attack. And thats not just offensively but defensively as well.Bednar has also stressed moving the puck out of the zone, so quick passes from the defensemen to the forwards to start the breakout. Colorado has spent too much time in its own end the past few seasons, which led to Avalanche goaltenders facing a lot of shots every game.We still go D to D, defenseman Tyson Barrie told The Denver Post. Its going to be D to D with a purpose, to get it in the forwards hands. The Avalanche have reached the postseason once in the last six seasons -- in 2014, when Patrick Roy led Colorado to 112 points and the Central Division title in his first year as the coach. The team struggled with poor starts the next two years and missed the playoffs.Roys abrupt resignation Aug. 11 forced an unexpected coaching search that snagged Bednar from the Columbus system. While Avalanche players said they were stunned by Roys departure, they are embracing Bednars system. Its great for me, 21-year-old center Nathan MacKinnon told The Denver Post. I can just skate and not think so much. Be aggressive. I think the biggest thing is that if were going to make mistakes, theyre aggressive mistakes. Weve been very passive the last couple of seasons. One thing that contributed to Colorado missing the playoffs the last two years was bad starts to those seasons. The Avalanche are hoping a 6-0 preseason portends a fast start to this year, similar to the 12-1 mark they had at the beginning of the 2013-14 campaign. It wont be easy against a Dallas team that won the Central Division last year and beat Anaheim 4-2 in its season opener on Thursday. The play of goalie Antti Niemi in the win, after a tough finish to last season, has the Stars feeling confident going into Saturdays game at Pepsi Center.I am really happy with the preseason and with all the practice we have done, Niemi told the Dallas Morning News. I just want to keep doing the same thing here and not worry that this was the season opener.Niemi was 1/3 with a 3.29 goals-against average in the playoffs last season, but if Thursday is any indication he is back on track. He faced 17 shots in the first period against the Ducks and finished with 33 saves.I thought Antti was excellent, Stars coach Lindy Ruff told the Dallas Morning News. That first period, we had some bad decisions, gave up some odd-numbered rushes, gave up three two-on-ones where he made real good saves. Richard Dent Jersey .05 million next season unless Graham and the Saints subsequently agree on a long-term deal. The team also announced Tuesday that the Braves will wear a commemorative patch on the right sleeve during the season. The Norwegian will say his goodbyes to fans following Sundays Premiership title party as they play Motherwell at Celtic Park, live on Sky Sports 2. The 40-year-old is standing down after leading the Hoops to back-to-back league titles but leaves behind a club at odds with their own supporters who are unhappy with chief executive Peter Lawwell and the recent downsizing of their spending ambitions. However, at his final pre-match news conference, Deila insisted it is important the fans put their differences to one side and give the man taking over the backing he will need to stave off the challenge coming next season from the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Rangers, back in the top division after a four-season absence.Asked what message he had for the supporters, Deila said: First Id want to thank all the fans. Its been two fantastic years and the relationship I had with them was very good.I wish them all the best in the future. This club is special and they need to understand how special it is and protect it, because everybody now wants to drag it down. They want us to lose. Its important we have unity. The players, the staff, the new manager coming - they need time and support. If they do that people will grow and they will get the best out of them and there will be a lot more trophies here at Celtic. Celtic lost to arch rivals Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final Deila has just one final piece of silverware to hoist aloft at Celtic Park on Sunday, however. His failure to lead his side into the Champions League badly undermined his tenure in Glasgow, with last months Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers ultimately leading to his exit. But while the former Stromsgodset boss, who confirmed he will fly back to Norway on Sunday evening, knows his reign will have divided opinions, he insists he was right to take on the challenge. What you remember is the trophies in the end, he said. They are what go down in the history books. Celtic celebrate winning the title after beating Aberdeen Some will think I was a great guy who did everything I could and had some success.dddddddddddd Others will think I was a complete disaster and should have done better. But thats why this is the greatest sport in the world. Its full of opinions.Sunday will be a little bit sad but at the same time it is a good feeling. It is difficult to say what Im feeling. I need time to reflect on what I have been through these last two years before I can really express what I feel. But it will be strange on Monday when I dont have anything to go to. I havent had that for 20 years. Ive been in this game for so long. Ive never had the summers off so now is the first time. But I think the best thing is to have a little bit of time off now and to reflect on what Ive been through, recharge the batteries and then really get that hungry look again. Reaction from both camps after Celtic lost 2-1 to St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership. However, if something very interesting comes along that feels right for me then of course it is possible to do it. But I have to have time to find the right one.It has to be something that excites me. It was like that when I came to Celtic. There was no thought in my head saying I could not do it. I will never regret that decision. Also See: Celtic slip up at St Johnstone ONeill calm over Celtic link Gordon: Keane hard but fair Collins confirms Celtic exit ' ' '
