The Denver Broncos first pass of their 2016 preseason was a left-handed throw by a right-handed quarterback, but the team settled in after Mark Sanchezs initial off-hand flip.Sanchez finished 10-of-13 passing for 99 yards and a touchdown to go with an interception. Trevor Siemian was 7-of-12 for 88 yards and led the team to a field goal. Rookie Paxton Lynch played the second half for the Broncos, going 6-for-7 with 74 yards in his first NFL game.We came out with a purpose: Let those guys throw it around, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told KUSA-TV as he left the field at halftime of an eventual 22-0 win over the Bears.Sanchez and Siemian were a combined 17-of-25 for 187 yards in the opening half. The Broncos had a 20-0 lead at halftime, including a blocked punt that linebacker Zaire Anderson recovered for a touchdown.Sanchez started, and after the opening southpaw toss, he showed some promise.Just keep improving, Sanchez said of what he has to do to clinch the starting job. Keep improving and having fun out there. Dont overthink it. Were having a great time, weve got a great squad and its a great opportunity. Im just going to keep maximizing every opportunity I get, like I did tonight. He went 7-of-8 passing for 83 yards, with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the Broncos opening drive -- a 10-play affair that used up the opening 5 minutes, 28 seconds. But as the Broncos started to move the ball again in their second possession, Sanchez had a tipped pass intercepted by Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman.Entering the game, Sanchez, who has 84 career interceptions in 75 regular-season games, said he knew the importance of avoiding turnovers. The most important thing when you come to a preseason game is that these plays arent really scripted anymore, Sanchez said earlier this week. Its not just a practice atmosphere where you go through and say, OK, this is the situation. Its all happening at a much more fluid manner. You have to be able to handle those situations as they present themselves, just move your team down the field, learn from the mistakes you made in practice and transfer those over to the games. You have to be proud of what you put on tape.Siemian, who played at Northwestern and whose parents were at Soldier Field on Thursday night, entered the game early in the second quarter. Like Sanchez, Siemian had plenty of chances to throw the ball.Siemian had a chance for a touchdown on his first drive, but Bennie Fowler couldnt haul in a well-placed pass to his back shoulder, with Bears rookie cornerback Deiondre Hall knocking out the ball.As a result, Siemians first drive ended with a field goal. He is expected to get the start in the Broncos second preseason game Aug. 20 against the San Francisco 49ers.Siemian also addressed what he needs to do to win the starting job.Not too much differently, he said. Just kind of do what Ive been doing, stay within myself, and the plays will come. Im on a pretty good team. Whoevers pulling the trigger back there, guys are going step up and make plays. In all, the Broncos took a long look at their top two quarterbacks by putting the ball in the air plenty. They ran the ball just eight times in the first half. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Brian Leetch Jersey . Danny Willett believes it is unfair that his withdrawal from next weeks World Cup in Australia has also cost Lee Westwood his debut in the event.Masters champion Willett pulled out of the event on Friday as he did not want to risk aggravating an ongoing back problem by competing at Kingston Heath in Melbourne. That meant Justin Rose, as the next highest-ranked player from the original standings used at the end of the U.S. PGA Championship, was invited to compete, only for the Olympic champion to also be ruled out by a back injury.Roses Ryder Cup team-mate Chris Wood was next in line and - under tournament rules -- able to select the partner of his choice, the 28-year-old from Bristol choosing fellow Hazeltine debutant Andy Sullivan.Obviously when the guys have booked their flights I think its not quite right just because one guy pulls out that the other guy has to kind of withdraw without having a say in it, Willett said ahead of the DP World Tour Championship,, where he could win the Race to Dubai for the first time.ddddddddddddI think you just then go down the list and see which guy potentially wants to play. With such short notice, I dont see why they have switched it around and made it two brand new guys.It was a decision made purely within my best interests going forward. And unfortunately the backlash is the Westy situation. I just think it was a bit unfair for that tournament to kind of go about it the way they did.I spoke to Westy and I apologised. Westy has been pretty good about it and it was a shame how it ended because we were both looking forward to going down there and pairing up.Asked if he was expecting a bill from Westwood for his wasted airline tickets, Willett joked: You never know. If we have a good week this week Ill be able to buy him a bottle of wine for Christmas. ' ' '
