KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The assumption all along has been that the Chiefs Spencer Ware would provide a nice stop-gap at running back until Jamaal Charles returned to full-time duty from his devastating knee injury.Ware showed last weekend that hes not going anywhere. In fact, he made quite an argument for bringing Charles out of the bullpen in a relief role. The bruising fantasy darling ran 24 times for 131 yards and a touchdown to lead Kansas City to a 26-10 victory in Oakland . Ware also had a couple of nice catches, showcasing some of the same versatility that had made Charles a mainstay in the lineup. When you talk about Jamaal, youre talking about a Hall of Fame player. We always say, `Youre not going to replace Jamaal, thats not what you do, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. But I dont want to take anything away from Ware and the way he plays. Hes so tough.Having them both out there, Reid added, thats a win-win, I think.Indeed, Charles had more carries last weekend in his second game back from a torn ACL, and even found the end zone for the first time in more than a year. But it was Ware who carried the bulk of the load, and the former LSU standout will likely do the same on Sunday against New Orleans. It was an especially encouraging sign given his struggles holding onto the ball lately.Ware never fumbled once in high school or college, and had never fumbled into the NFL until he coughed up the ball in Week 2 in Houston. Then again the next week against the Jets. And again the next week in a 43-14 loss at Pittsburgh just ahead of the bye.You probably couldnt have painted a better picture for him, to bounce back in a sloppy game, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said. To have him go out there and not only run the way he did, but obviously ball-security is something that we put a huge premium on, and to see him bounce back from that made everyone -- I know I was -- really happy for him.The ideal would be for Ware and Charles to coexist, and that certainly seems possible. Ware may have shown some versatility this season but he remains a power back at heart, while Charles offers the kind of game-breaking speed that not even two surgically repair ACLs have taken away. The challenge now is finding the right balance. How do the Chiefs provide each enough touches to get into a rhythm, feel like theyre a part of the offense and, ultimately, keep them happy?I think Andy and those guys on his staff have done a great job at adjusting the changes on offense with the players in the system, Saints coach Sean Payton said. You see the backs like Charles and Ware, the great job in coaching is taking those players and applying them each week.To their credit, Ware and Charles have been saying and doing all the right things. And for that matter, so has Charcandrick West, whose own role has diminished since Charles returned. They all talk about how tightly knit the running back room is, and how they take pride in helping each other during games. And when Ware is ripping off big chunks of yards, like he was doing last week in Oakland, Charles and West are happy to cheer from the sideline. It was all the way around on offense, Charles said after the game. Spence did a great job running the ball. West did a great job when he was in there. So we all complement each other and we all feed off each others energy.Good thing, too, because the Chiefs sure look like theyre going to keep feeding Ware the ball.Game notes LB Justin Houston (ACL surgery) came through his first practice well , defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said. Houston will continue to work slowly into game shape. He did a very limited amount of individual (work), Sutton said Thursday. We have to be patient and smart. ... Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy didnt take umbrage with Raiders coach Jack Del Rio calling the Chiefs offense gimmicky. In fact, he took it as a compliment. Thats his opinion, Nagy said. There are some things we do in our offense that are a little bit different.---Online: AP NFL websites: http://pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFLPeter Shorts Jersey Store . Nelsen isnt saying if Forlan is one of them. But it seems clear that the rookie coach would not be upset if owner Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment dug deep into its wallet and the 34-year-old Uruguayan walked through the door. The TFC ownership is not short on ambition and new CEO Tim Leiweke has talked of reached for the soccer stars. Nelsen insists, however, that it makes little sense bringing in a marquee name if the team, currently sporting a 2-8-7 record, cannot support him properly. "Can our team handle a player of that calibre?" he asked Wednesday. "Because one player is not going to come in and all of a sudden youre going to win the league. It doesnt happen like that. "We have to get the squad right, the squad balanced right, the balance of the salary cap right. Competition between players. Weve got to get everything sorted out. The foundation of the clubs got to be right and thats been the problem with this club so many years. "They never had it right. Theyve never had the salary cap right. Theyve never had the depth right. And weve got to go through some growing pains before we get there. Once we get that right, once we get a nice balanced squad where the salary caps balanced as well. Youve got young players with experienced players. Then players of that calibre, you dont mind spending that money because theres a foundation." Toronto is not there yet. So short of the planets aligning, dont expect Forlan just yet. Nelsen, who spoke highly of Forlans skills while noting he is under contract to a team in Brazil, is looking at adding two or three players in the transfer window that just opened. The clubs salary cap issues will be eased next season, with contracts expiring, allowing the management to redistribute wages. "You look at anybodys salary ccap, youve got to spend wisely," Nelson said.dddddddddddd "You cant spend a certain amount of money on certain positions. That hasnt really been adhered to at Toronto. It seems to have been just kind of spending for the sake of spending. So weve got to try and have a balance." The 2013 league salary cap is US$2.95 million, which essentially covers 20 players. According to the MLS Players Union, TFC has $766,250 tied up in fullbacks Darren ODea and Richard Eckersley -- thats more than a quarter of the cap. Their take of the cap could be even larger since the league does not divulge how clubs use allocation money to pay down salaries. "It definitely will be a lot easier next season," Nelsen said of the rebuild. "But I think were getting there." A young forward is in the cards. Toronto was foiled in its bid to sign Argentine Maximilano Urruti earlier in the season. That chase may not be over, however. Experience is wanted in midfield, to help the likes of Matias Laba and Jonathan Osorio. That experience could come in the form of another designated player. The trade of attacking midfielder Luis Silva to D.C. United could open up the funds to sign two players, the manager said. Help is also needed at fullback which has been a problem spot despite the big salaries. Eckersley is healthy again after missing the last 14 games with a hamstring issue. ODea was moved to fullback from centre back. Ashtone Morgan, Ryan Richter and Darel Russell have yet to make the position their own. Toronto also has to adjust what it spends on the position, Next season, Nelsen sees bringing in "two or three more North American-type players, MLS experienced players." "And then all of a sudden youre kind of looking at a squad that has the right balance that can handle the league." NOTES -- Forward Kevin Davies, once linked to Toronto, has signed a two-year-deal with Englands Preston North End. ' ' '
