WASHINGTON -- Production from the top of the order and rookie pitcher Reynaldo Lopez fueled an early lead for the Washington Nationals. Then a relay throw saved the day for the NL contenders.Daniel Murphy hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs, Lopez pitched seven innings for his first major league win and the Washington Nationals held off the Atlanta Braves 7-6 on Saturday night.Trailing 7-1 entering the eighth, Atlanta scored one run in the eighth and four in the ninth against the bullpen. Mark Melancon came on after the Braves scored twice in the ninth and recorded the final three outs for his 33rd save.Erick Aybars two-run double against Melancon pulled the Braves within one. With no outs and Freddie Freeman on deck, Aybar tried for third base and was thrown out by shortstop Danny Espinosa, who relayed the cutoff toss from center fielder Ben Revere. The Braves challenged the call, but replay upheld the ruling. The game-saver was a relay that you work on all the time from Ben to Danny, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. If (Danny) had a lesser arm, it would have been a runner on third.Trea Turner had three hits, including a homer and one of Washingtons three triples. Revere had the other two and drove in a run for the NL East leaders. The Nationals played their fifth straight game without injured right fielder Bryce Harper and first without former closer Jonathan Papelbon, who was released before the game to make room on the roster for Lopez (1-1). The right-handed Lopez allowed one run and five hits.It was a great performance, Baker said. We didnt want to blow that.Rob Whalen (1-1) surrendered six runs and six hits over five innings in his third big league start. The Braves have lost three of four.Lopez, one of Washingtons top prospects, didnt pitch five full innings in either of his previous big league starts, and this start opened with a thud. Freeman put Atlanta up 1-0 in the first with his 23rd home run, matching his career high. Lopez kept Atlanta scoreless from there while dancing out of occasional trouble. Its an incredible feeling especially since Im trying to help the team get a playoff spot, the rookie said of his first win.Baker said Lopez would probably get another start, but wouldnt commit.Washington took a 2-1 lead in the first with Turners leadoff triple and Murphys towering drive down the right-field line.Turner homered during a two-run third inning and scored his third run in the fifth on Reveres second triple.Papelbon was 2-4 with a 4.37 ERA and 19 saves this season. It hasnt happened in a long time. So it should give them an understanding of what it takes to win a game in the Pac-12.I dont know if its a program-defining moment. I wouldnt necessarily say that. I expect those to be down the road.Garretsons game-winner was practically a walk to the end zone during the final 10 yards, but the outset of the play was hair-raising. Garretson bobbled the center snap, but quickly recovered, cut to his right and sprinted to the end zone to put away California (3-3, 1-2).Thank God I had that left glove on. These guys are giving me (a hard time) about it because its a linemans glove, but it is what it is, and it stuck, so were good, Garretson said.It was fitting that Oregon State won the game on a running play, because the Beavers ran over California most of the night.Ryan Nall ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns but left the game early in the fourth quarter with a leg injury. Garretson rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and completed 13 of 24 passes for 85 yards.Oregon State ran for 474 yards, a school record against a Pac-12 opponent. The Beavers had a season-high 559 yards, though it almost wasnt enough, as they blew a 17-point, fourth-quarter lead.Davis Webb threw for 113 yards, well under his season average of 428.6 passing yards, for California (3-3, 1-2). Khalfani Muhammad ran for 165 yards and a touchdown while Tre Watson had 134 yards and two touchdowns. But the poor run defense and lack of offense for much of the game -- 180 yards through three quarters -- left Cal coach Sonny Dykes perplexed. Our guys fought hard in the second half, but it was too little, too late, Dykes said. I tolld them guys, I didnt think we deserved to win.dddddddddddd. We sleepwalked through the first half, for sure.Nall ripped off runs of 80 and 62 yards during the third quarter as Oregon State increased its lead to 34-17. Artavis Pierce scored on a 2-yard run that made it 41-24 with 10:35 left when it began to unravel.California trimmed the deficit to 41-38 with 2:41 left and Matt Andersons 29-yard field goal with five seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.OSUs defense forced a three-and-out by California in overtime, and Anderson kicked a 39-yard field goal to set the stage for Garretsons game-winner.The defense studded up and made them kick a field goal. We made the play we needed to make to win the game, Andersen said.THE TAKEAWAYCALIFORNIA: The Bears lost their seventh consecutive road game, and it wont look pretty on video next week. The Pac-12s worst rushing defense continued to struggle, giving up an average run of 10.1 yards to Oregon State.OREGON STATE: The Beavers rank No. 100 or lower in rushing, passing and total offense nationally, but didnt look the part in the first half when they scored on their first three drives. Led by the bruising runs of Nall, Oregon State also scored on its first four drives of the second half.NALL APPEARS OKNall said he reinjured his foot early in the fourth quarter, an injury hes been dealing with this season. Andersen said he expects Nall, whose 221 yards was a career high and 10th best in Oregon State history, will be ready to play next Saturday against Utah. When Nall left in the game with 11 minutes remaining, he was within 18 yards of the Reser Stadium record of 239 rushing yards, set by Steven Jackson.UP NEXTCALIFORNIA: The Bears get a bye next week as they prep for a Friday, Oct. 21 home game against Oregon, a wounded opponent on a four-game losing streak.OREGON STATE: The Beavers remain in Corvallis and cap a two-game home stand against Utah next Saturday.
