PITTSBURGH --?Cam Heyward had seen enough. From his locker Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end and co-captain was critical of his teams defense after giving up a combined 362 rushing yards to Miami and New England and letting Rob Gronkowski get loose at a critical moment in Sundays 27-16 loss to the Patriots at home. The Steelers enter the bye week with back-to-back losses -- the only two games Heyward has missed in his six-year career -- thanks in part to a reeling defense that allowed a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter. We had momentum going [into that drive], Heyward said. It was 20-16, and we let them get that. And it was like we just quit. I dont mean to say that lightly, but I just felt like we had so many opportunities out there.Gronkowskis double fake in the open field freed him up for a 37-yard gain, and LeGarrette Blount followed with a 5-yard touchdown run. Blount ran all over Pittsburgh, with 127 yards and two scores.Heyward clarified that he didnt sense an effort problem, but rather urgency and situational football awareness were issues. New Englands defense was tired, Heyward said, so forcing a stop would have been timely. The Gronkowski play felt like the wind was pushed out of us and the defense should have made more of a stand, Heyward said.Of the 362 rushing yards, Heyward said, Thats never been allowed here in two weeks. Thats just piss-poor [tackling] technique. You have to have some pride when youre out there.Linebacker Ryan Shazier told reporters Sunday the Steelers run defense was garbage, to which Heyward said Shazier was being kind.Three of the Steelers former first-round picks on defense -- Heyward, Shazier and Bud Dupree -- have missed games this year because of injury. That doesnt excuse a letdown when players go out, Heyward said. The Steelers have a league-low eight sacks on the year and are among the NFLs lowest in interceptions with three. Once famous for the Blitzburgh label, the Steelers have blitzed a dropback passer seven times the past two weeks, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 6-of-7 for 101 yards against those blitzes.Defensive end Stephon Tuitt said the teams struggles in stopping the run are affecting its ability to blitz more. The Steelers face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9, possibly without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, whos nursing a knee injury. This bye week is very important for us, Tuitt said. CALGARY, Alberta -- Jamie Benn snapped out of an early season slump in a big way Thursday night. The Dallas Stars captain ended a nine-game scoring drought with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-2 victory over the struggling Calgary Flames. It seems like I go through a streak like that every year. It just so happened to come pretty early this year, said Benn, who only had two goals in his first 13 games after a career-best 41 last season. When an offensive-zone penalty by Alex Chiasson put the Stars on the power play early in the third with the score tied, it took less than a minute for Dallas to convert with Benn firing a feed from Tyler Seguin past Brian Elliott to make it 3-2.He was really buzzing out there tonight, Seguin said. Thats what we needed. We needed a leader, especially our captain, to lead the way after the embarrassing loss we had the other night. The Stars were routed 8-2 on Tuesday in Winnipeg, to extend their winless skid to five games. We all knew that eventually he would come out of it. The Stars five-game trip continues Friday in Edmonton.Johnny Gaudreau scored both goals for Calgary (5-9-1). The Flames have lost five of six overall. Were finding ways to lose, Gulutzan said. We need somebody now to step up and find a way to win and stop playing the victim. With the Flames trailing 2-0, Gaudreau came out flying to start the second, breaking a six-game scoring drought with his third and fourth goals on his first two shifts to pull Calgary even.It was nice to find the net finally, said Gaudreau, who scored 30 goals in his sophomore season. Me, (Monahan) and (Chiasson) played a good 60 minutes tonight. We were in their zone most of the night.Calgary opened the game taking the play to the Stars and running up an 8-1 lead on the shot clock. But they could not beat Lehtonen and at 12:31, Korpiskoski snapped a shot into the top corner.Benn made it 2-0 3 minutes later when the entire slot opened up before him and he took the puck to the net, zipping a backhand past Elliott. It was a better night for Kari Lehtonen after giving up four goals on 11 shots against the Jets. He finished with 29 saves to improve to 2-4-2.Elliott, who had 18 saves, fell to 3-7-0.Game notes Calgary is 0 for 26 with the extra man at home. ...
