The 33rd running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup presented by Lanes End brings together a superbly talented field of nine 3-year-old fillies at Keeneland, all stakes winners and seven having won Grade 1 or 2 stakes in their careers. In terms of overall accomplishments, Catch a Glimpse gets first mention as she is eight for 10 in her career including a win in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational in July. Time and Motion turned the tables on Catch a Glimpse when winning the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes in August and the two are set to square off for the third time. Harmonize won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks when last seen and is another with the credentials to succeed.Stays in Vegas was beaten a head in the Del Mar Oaks and can improve, as can fourth-place Oaks finisher Mokat, who previously won the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes. Hawksmoor and On Leave are two fillies yet to run against the previously mentioned trio. Hawksmoor won the Group 2 German 2000 Guineas in June while On Leave won the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes in her most recent race.Analysis and contenders: Let me start by saying there is no question that Catch a Glimpse, Harmonize, Time and Motion or Mokat can win as all four are graded stakes winners. Most of the four have faced each other multiple times and some have taken turns with each other. On any given day, any of these vastly talented fillies can win, and I will NOT be discounting their chances one bit. However, the new faces intrigue me a lot, and they are very likely to go to post at higher odds than the four previously mentioned fillies, so those are two horses I will be considering for win bets.Hawksmoor makes her North American debut, with a three-for-nine record in Europe. Three races back, in June, in a Group 2 (a very tough level) stakes in Germany, because of the addition of blinkers, she won in a field of 16. Hawksmoor then faced OLDER fillies and mares in the Group 2 Killboy Estate Stakes in Ireland, finishing third. She was not disgraced a bit when beaten a nose and a half-length for the win. In her most recent race, the Group 1 Matron Stakes in Ireland, Hawksmoor once again faced older opponents, finishing fifth of nine. For her U.S. debut, she adds Lasix and gets a local jockey in Corey Lanerie. If she is able to run back to either of her two efforts prior to the last one, she has every right to win this years Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Invitational. On Leave has slowly worked her way up the class ladder in her six starts to date. She won her first start this year, in June, and is unbeaten in three races since. Her last race was her best effort yet, as she won the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes, at this nine furlong turf trip. Jose Ortiz is the only jockey to ride On Leave to date and knows exactly what to do in order to get her to win. The 110 Equibase Figure she earned winning the Sands Point stacks up just fine when compared to the 112 figure Catch a Glimpse earned winning the Belmont Oaks Invitational and the 111 Harmonize earned winning the Del Mar Oaks. Best of all, On Leave has demonstrated the fastest final quarter-mile time of any horse in this field, running 22.6 when winning in July and 22.5 when victorious in the Riskaverse Stakes in August. Catch a Glimpse may be tough to run down as usual, but On Leave has potential to do just that in this race. The rest of the field, with their best representative Equibase Speed Figures, is Catch a Glimpse (112), Harmonize (111), Stays in Vegas (111), Queen Caroline (101), Mokat (110), Time and Motion (112) and Try Your Luck (102).My top two contenders 1. On Leave 2. HawksmoorFor more stories like this check out Americas Best Racing. Somewhere down the road it could happen, maybe even before this season is over. But it wont be right now. Gibby has only had 32 games with this bunch. As bad as the Marlins were last season, and with all the feathers he ruffled when he lauded Fidel Castro, Ozzie Guillen didnt get fired five weeks into his first season with Miami. The weirdest early firing I could find dates back to 1979. The Major Ralph Houk stepped down as manager of the Detroit Tigers after the 1978 season and retired. Shortly thereafter, Detroit named Les Moss as its new skipper. Moss had been named Manager of the Year in the American Association in 1978 and the Sporting News named him Minor League Manager of the Year. Moss was also credited with helping develop Lance Parrish into a star catcher at Triple A after the Tigers converted him from third base. So Les Moss, a former journeyman catcher in the big leagues was not without credentials. Moss managed the Tigers to a 27-26 record when suddenly out of the blue, he was fired. Detroit management had nothing against Moss performance or the teams record. They simply felt a better man was available and they wanted him before he was snapped up by another team. That man was George Sparky Anderson, who led the Big Red Machine to two World Series titles in the mid-70s but had been fired by the Reds well after the 1978 season ended. In fact, he was let go after the club made a post-season trip to Japan. It was also after the Tigers had hired Les Moss as their skipper. As classless a move as it originally appeared to fire Moss after just a third of a season and with no apparent cause, the Tigers werent about to let Sparky get away. Hiring Anderson turned out to be the right move. Though they won only one World Series under Sparky, the Tigers were the American League team of the 80s. Sparky went on to manage the club through the end of the 1995 season and still has the most victories of any manager in Tigers history (1,331). Moss continued as a coach in the Majors and even made it to the posst-season as a pitching coach in Houston, but he never got the chance to manager in the big leagues again.dddddddddddd Would the Blue Jays use the same logic to replace John Gibbons? At some point maybe, but not now. As youre no doubt tired of hearing, its too early. Injury Concerns? Over the weekend, I was going over some of the Blue Jays minor league stats and saw something that really caught me off guard. There are seven pitchers on the 7-day disabled list at Double A New Hampshire, including three of the Jays top pitching prospects, righthanders John Stilson and lefty Sean Nolin. I made a couple of phone calls and learned that these three werent actually with the Fisher Cats but in Florida for extended spring training. The people I spoke with didnt believe the problems these three had were anything serious, but neither did they know when any of the three would be reporting to Double A. Jenkins pitched a bit in middle relief with the Blue Jays late last season while Stilson really impressed John Gibbons in spring training and Nolin may actually be the best of the three. This is a situation worth keeping an eye on. What a Comeback David Ortiz is already a front running candidate for Comeback Player of the Year in the American League. After losing the bulk of last season to an achilles tendon injury, Ortiz has been on fire since rejoining the BoSox about a week into this season. Hes put together a 25-game hit streak, is batting .440, has four homers and 17 runs batted in. That RBI total is higher than anyone on the Blue Jays other than Edwin Enacarnacion, who has 21. Time Flies How the years have flown by. The great Willie Mays is 82 today. Say Hey Willie, one of the top three players of all time. As good as Mickey Mantle and Duke Snider were, Willie was the best centrefield in the era, when all three player were in New York - Mantle with the Yankees, Snider with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Mays with the New York Giants. From 1951 through 1958, one of those three and, in some of those years, two were in the World Series and, between them, won seven out of eight over that span. ' ' '
