SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres gained a starting pitcher, lost to the Cincinnati Reds and then wondered when the next time theyd have All-Star shortstop Everth Cabrera in the lineup. Homer Bailey came within two outs of a five-hit shutout to end his four-start losing streak and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Padres 4-1 Wednesday to snap a five-game skid. Brandon Phillips homered and Joey Votto hit a two-run double for the Reds, who avoided a three-game sweep and ended San Diegos four-game winning streak. Before the game, the Padres acquired right-hander Ian Kennedy from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hes scheduled to start Sunday against his original team, the New York Yankees. Cabrera, San Diegos All-Star shortstop, wont say whether Major League Baseball plans to suspend him for his role in the Biogenesis case. "I can talk nothing about the situation and just wait for that moment," Cabrera said. San Diego is off Thursday. While discipline had been expected to be announced Friday, it now appears the probe wont be wrapped up until at least the weekend. If Cabrera is suspended 50 games for a first offence under baseballs drug program, he would lose $348,361 of his $1,275,000 salary. Asked whether he would appeal or accept a suspension, Cabrera repeated what hed been saying before and after the game: "I can say nothing about the situation. "Its a tough situation for me and the organization, too, you know, for the Padres and my teammates," he added. "The only thing I can say is the things happening are not going to stop my career and my motivation for being a better player." Said manager Bud Black: "If it happens, its going to be a tough one. Hes been one of our better players when hes been out there. He was our All-Star. Hes really come into his own this year and its going to hurt, if that happens." Bailey had allowed just five singles going into the ninth, when Cabrera reached on a fielding error by first baseman Votto leading off the inning. The right-hander got Chris Denorfia to fly out before Chase Headley doubled in Cabrera. Manager Dusty Baker pulled Bailey, and Aroldis Chapman got the final two outs for his 25th save in 29 chances. The performance by Bailey was just what the Reds needed to end a 10-game West Coast trip on a positive note. Not only had the Reds lost five straight after winning the first four games of the trip, but Bailey hadnt won since throwing the second no-hitter of his career July 2 at home against San Francisco. Three of his four losses since then had come on the road. Bailey (6-10) allowed six hits and one unearned run, struck out seven and walked none. Phillips homered to centre field off lefty Eric Stults (8-10) leading off the second, his 13th. "Homer pitched well," Black said. "Stultsy matched him all the way through until the seventh. But Bailey was good. ... We just couldnt seem to square the fastball up. He had good movement, pitched well. Hes got that capability. Hes got a good arm." Stults allowed four runs, one earned, on 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out five and walked none. "Homer Bailey threw well today. There wasnt much that he wasnt doing well," Stults said. "We just couldnt mount much against him. It was just one of those days where it just didnt go our way." The Reds added three more runs in the seventh, all unearned because of third baseman Headleys throwing error on Derrick Robinsons grounder. The error put runners on first and third, and Chris Heisey singled to left to score Zack Cosart, aboard on a leadoff single. Votto followed with a double to right to bring in Robinson and Heisey. NOTES: The Reds are off Thursday before opening an eight-game homestand with the first of three games against the NL Central rival St. Louis Cardinals. RHP Bronson Arroyo (9-8, 3.26 ERA) is scheduled to start against RHP Shelby Miller (10-7, 2.79). ... The Padres welcome the New York Yankees to Petco Park for the first time on Friday. The scheduled starters are LHP CC Sabathia (9-9, 4.65) against RHP Andrew Cashner (7-5, 3.88)....Kennedy was obtained from the Diamondbacks for lefty reliever Joe Thatcher, a minor leaguer and a 2014 draft pick.Cheap Dodgers Jerseys .
