SEATTLE -- Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano put a charge into Safeco Field in the eighth inning, and then reliever Edwin Diaz got to shut it all down for the first time.Cano hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run eighth, new closer Diaz got his first major league save and the Mariners overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Tuesday night.Cano capped the comeback with his 24th homer, off newly acquired Red Sox reliever Fernando Abad (1-5). It spoiled what had been a dominant performance by Boston left-hander David Price.Thats baseball. You cant explain it, you really cant, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Thats what makes baseball great. The fans ride the roller coaster with us. At times, we are tough to watch. I get it, he added. But you have to keep watching because our guys dont quit and they believe something good is going to happen and tonight it did.The Mariners had three hits off Price through seven innings and trailed 4-0. Then Mike Zunino opened the eighth with a home run to left off Price, and Leonys Martin, Sardinas and Guillermo Heredia followed with consecutive singles to chase the lefty.Matt Barnes struck out pinch-hitter Seth Smith. Abad came in and tried to get a curveball past Cano, who hit it 394 feet for a one-run lead.I was just looking for something over the plate, said Cano, who was 1 for 11 in his career against Abad. Hes one of the toughest lefty relievers in the game right now. The guy has got me out a lot of times. I just try to put it in play.Red Sox manager John Farrell said Abad, had such good success against Cano. Hes working the at-bat in good shape. He got him to chase a couple breaking balls, missed one over the middle of the plate and that was the difference in this one.Diaz replaced struggling Steve Cishek as closer after Cishek blew a three-run lead in a loss Sunday night to the Cubs and allowed a go-ahead homer in the ninth during a 2-1 defeat to Boston on Monday night. Diaz is a 22-year-old rookie only two months out of Double-A but has a 1.73 ERA in 25 appearances for Seattle. He struck out three in a scoreless ninth Tuesday.Diaz gave up a one-out walk to Travis Shaw, but Cano came up with the assist. When Cano came to (visit) me, I started to relax, Diaz said. He helped me a lot on the mound. Every time he comes to talk to me, I do everything good. I appreciate it. My first save.Donn Roach (2-0) pitched two innings for the win.Top Red Sox prospect Andrew Benintendi entered as a pinch-hitter for his major league debut and went 0 for 2, striking out to end the game. Benintendi is expected to start in left field on Wednesday night.David Ortiz doubled and had two RBI. The 40-year-old has the most doubles (36) in a season ever for a player 40 or older, eclipsing Sam Rice, who had 35 in 1930.He also has 62 extra-base hits, tying Dave Winfield (1992) for most in a season for a 40-or-older player.Hanley Ramirez crushed a 454-foot home run off Wade LeBlanc in the third. Aaron Hill had an RBI single in the same inning, scoring Jackie Bradley Jr. from second.ROTATION ADDITONSThe Mariners will add two starters to the rotation this next turn. OAKLAND, Calif. -- With ace Clayton Kershaws troublesome back making him somewhat of an unknown for the stretch run, the contending Los Angeles Dodgers boosted their depleted rotation Monday by getting left-hander Rich Hill and right fielder Josh Reddick from the Oakland Athletics for a trio of pitching prospects. With Reddick acquired, the Dodgers plan to demote outfielder Yasiel Puig to the minor leagues on Tuesday, according to Puigs agent, Adam Katz. Katz said Puig did not travel with the Dodgers to Colorado on Monday after being told hed either be traded or sent down. The deal was announced two hours before the deadline for completing trades without waivers. The As received minor leaguers Jharel Cotton and Grant Holmes, along with Frankie Montas, who made seven appearances with the White Sox last year -- three pitchers that general manager David Forst expects to help his team for years to come.Letting Reddick go wasnt an easy call. This was not a typical decision because of Josh, Forst said. ... Josh has been here for a long time and in a lot of ways has been the face of the franchise over the past number of years and has really connected with the fans, everybody who works here, the staff. I cant say enough about Joshs time in an Oakland As uniform.Forst said despite ongoing discussions since the end of last year the sides never could work out a new contract that satisfied both parties, disappointing for the As and Reddick, Forst said, noting, this was not your typical buy-or-sell decision.Forst said Oakland was simultaneously considering trading Hill and extending his contract.Hill, who signed a $6 million, one-year ccontract with Oakland during the offseason, is on the disabled list with a pesky blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand that hasnt healed.dddddddddddd He had been scheduled to pitch Sunday in Cleveland before the DL stint.Big-spending Los Angeles began the day with a 59-46 record, two games out of first place in the NL West behind San Francisco. The 36-year-old Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts and 76 innings. The 29-year-old Reddick is batting .296 with eight home runs and 28 RBI. This was his fifth year with the As after spending his first three big league seasons with Boston. Both Hill and Reddick can become free agents after this season. Reddick is earning $6,575,000 this year. The As, at 47-58, are often sellers at the trade deadline. They made the deal with former Athletics executive and now-Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi.Montas hasnt pitched in the majors this year. He was scheduled for a follow-up scan Monday on his ribs. He had a rib resection done then suffered a setback during a rehab assignment when he sustained a stress fracture to another rib. That didnt deter the As, who are confident he will be fully healthy to pitch next season. We felt like we got significant value and made a significant contribution to the future of the organization, Forst said. At no point were we looking to move players for the sake of dollars, that was not ever a directive. And we also are not interested in moving players and throwing some sort of white flag for the rest of the season. ' ' '
