With less than a week to go until the 2016 NFL Draft, head coaches and general managers are busy making their final preparations, going over game footage and analysing all potential draft routes. However, 24 teams will attend the pro day for former Baylor basketball player Rico Gathers. The power forward hasnt played football since he was 13, but is hoping to impress scouts and coaches as a potential NFL-calibre tight end.During a three-week intensive work out Gathers has been catching passes from NFL quarterback Matt Flynn, as well as working with former NFL safety Ryan Clark to help develop his technique. Measuring up at 6ft 7in, Gathers will perform a range of speed and agility tests as he works through a full scouting combine routine at the New Orleans Saints training camp.Gathers is not likely to get picked up until the end of the draft, if at all, but this appearance could have a large bearing on whether teams will consider taking a gamble on him. This year marks the fifth time that the Formula One circus will rock up in Austin for the U.S. Grand Prix at COTA, a race that quickly became one of the most popular events on the calendar among those who travel to every venue. In an exclusive interview with ESPN, COTA CEO Bobby Epstein talks about the circuits growing popularity, the importance of repeat custom, and ever-increasing ticket sales in the wake of a disastrous weekend (on the weather front) in 2015.All of our events are up this year, Epstein said. MotoGP was up nicely as well, and thats a great event that we have every year. Weve really seen it building across the board with all of the racing events. There was not a natural fan base for racing in central Texas, but we took the chance and built it here [hoping] that, as people experienced the product, they would want to come back. That seems to be showing this year. For F1, Epstein says, COTA is seeing a lot of repeat custom, but with the added bonus that previous purchasers are buying more tickets per transaction with every passing year -- proof that word of mouth is paying off.Where we used to have one-point-something tickets per purchase, were now well into the high twos, to [nearly] three tickets per purchase, which shows that its not just the loyal F1 fan thats coming, its the family, the friends. Its not just the dedicated fan who has a reason to come, the family have a great reason. Hopefully were creating that family experience that I think a lot of people are looking for with their entertainment. One of the secrets of COTAs success has been managements refusal to pigeonhole the Circuit of the Americas as a grand prix track. Instead, the Austin venue is part concert hall, part test track, and part multi-series race venue, and it is this division of purposes that has proved to be COTAs greatest strength. At first you have to convince everyone that youre gonna be a good place to come to, and now I think weve earned a reputation for being a top notch facility and training experienced drivers that fans want to be a part of.For the first time were actually in a position to be able to say no to some events that may not be as profitable or a great fit for us, Epstein revealed. Thats part of the maturation process here. Weve got to the point now where we are able to be a little more selective and careful with what we get ourselves into.ddddddddddddSouth By Southwest had a nice event [at COTA] this year. Weve got two major festivals that are currently in downtown Austin that are looking at the possibility of relocating. We have our amphitheatre, and this year we had 24 concerts and a quarter of a million people for the shows. There have been some athletic events out here. Our overall programme was up anyway, but 2017 is looking really good for some of those things that take a lot to develop. Track rental is also up -- I think we are looking at 2018 for track rentals at this point, so the driving programmes are doing very well.Long-term, COTA is looking to be in good shape as prior investments begin to bear fruit, Epstein said. Were in the final stages of a hotel that, I believe, is a real entertainment destination-type hotel. When that comes, there are some ancillary entertainment developments to come around it. Thats really where the focus is at this point: instead of focussing on survival, we can focus on going forward.Looking forward in the short-term, COTA continues to go from strength to strength, Epstein said. Ticket sales this year are great. I think well be second to the inaugural race [when the box office closes]. Well have our second-largest crowd. Its our fifth year, and it seems like the time has gone by pretty quickly! One of the things we wanted to do is celebrate that anniversary, appeal to a new audience as well as the existing audience of F1 fans. One of the things we did when we built the circuit was deliberately build a concert amphitheatre -- it can hold a massive crowd, accommodate a concert for 70,000 people and let everyone see [the stage]. So COTA can offer a great concert-going experience. One of the things we felt was necessary from the time we started COTA, was to build a true fan-friendly festival weekend. We know that there are some die-hard F1 fans in the US, but there are also a lot of people who are either not aware of F1 or are simply curious. We want them to come out and have a fantastic experience, all the way from the racing to the entertainment to the village that we have created. ' ' '
