(STATS) -- Villanova just may keep extending coach Andy Talleys final season if it plays like it did Saturday in defeating visiting Saint Francis 31-21 in the first round of the FCS playoffs.Quarterback Zach Bednarczyk passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns and the Wildcats defense was in control of a Red Flash squad making its first-ever playoff appearance.Villanova (9-3) will play at No. 8 seed South Dakota State (8-3) in the second round next Saturday. The 73-year-old Talley, who led Villanova to the 2009 national title, is in his 32nd and final season with the CAA Football program. His Wildcats won their first-ever meeting with Northeast Conference co-champion Saint Francis (7-5) after rolling to a 31-7 halftime lead.I think in order to win in the playoffs, Talley said, you have to run the football and mix in a little bit of the passing game. Most importantly, you need to play defense. I think we are well-suited right now with a great defense and a pretty good offense.Villanova sacked Red Flash quarterback Zack Drayer six times, including 2 1/2 by defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon, the CAA Football defensive player of the year. The quicker the Wildcats got Saint Francis offense off the field, the more the ball was in the hands of Bednarczyk and their many running backs. They controlled the ball for 37 minutes, 35 seconds, with Matt Gudzaks 62 rushing yards leading their decisive 241-30 advantage on the ground. After Saint Francis closed within 10-7 on Zack Drayers 74-yard touchdown pass to Kamron Lewis with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter, Bednarczyk responded with a 59-yard scoring pass to tight end Ryan Bell before the quarter ended. The left-handed sophomore, who completed 18 of 27 passes, added two touchdown passes in the second quarter -- a 53-yarder to wide receiver Jarrett McClenton and a 2-yarder to Bell, who finished with five receptions for a career-high 110 yards.Saint Francis scored twice in the fourth, with Jalen Wells returning a Bednarczyk interception for a TD in the first minute and Drayer on a 1-yard run in the final minute. Lewis, who entered the game as the FCS leader in receiving yards, caught six passes for 129 yards to push his season total to 1,478.Wholesale Yeezy Shop . SEATTLE -- An injury to defender Andy OBrien cost the Vancouver Whitecaps a milestone victory. Vancouver coughed up a one-goal lead after a second-half injury felled OBrien on Saturday and the Whitecaps lost to Seattle 3-2, costing the team its first-ever win against the Sounders. "When we lost him, the game opened up," Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie said. "We were disjointed. I dont think any team in MLS can lose three -- really, weve lost four -- centre backs and be fine." OBrien went down in the 62nd minute with a hamstring strain. He said he felt it stretch when he reached for a ball. Not helping him was the field surface, temporary grass laid on top of the artificial turf at CenturyLink Field. With OBriens injury, Vancouver will now miss him, Jay DeMerit, Brad Rusin and Carlyle Mitchell at that position for the foreseeable future. "I dont think (the field) was great in the sense that it probably contributed to my injury," OBrien said. "It was unpredictable with the bounces, and its not ideal." Goalkeeper Brad Knighton went further in condemning the surface. "The field was ridiculously terrible," he said. "Its heavy, its bumpy, the turfs coming up. Its a weird surface to play on, and anytime you put grass on top of turf, youre going to get that." Neither OBrien nor Rennie could estimate how long the veteran defender would be out of action. Greg Klazura entered the match for OBrien, and he had to play out of position. Normally a wide defender, Klazura looked out of place in the middle. He conceded the penalty kick that tied the game after Vancouver took an early 2-1 lead. Camilo Sanvezzo gave the Whitecaps that lead with two headers, assisted by Russell Teibert. Both goals came in a 16-minute span in the first half. "There are loots of things for us to build on from this game," Rennie said.dddddddddddd"Camilo also had a fantastic free kick that was rebounded that we really had a good chance to make that 3-1. At that point, it would have been hard for them to get back." Sanvezzo added: "Its positive that I scored, but I think the team played well. a I think everybody had a good game, and we just need to pick up from here." However, Vancouver failed to capitalize on Sanvezzos free-kick opportunity, and in the second half, Seattle scored two goals of its own in a 10-minute burst to tie and win the game. Both goals came after OBrien left with his injury. "When you lose someone like 1/8OBrien 3/8 and you have to play your left back at right-centre back a that can happen," Rennie said. Sounders FC expanded its stadium capacity for the visiting Whitecaps, recognizing the games appeal because of the regional rivalry. The official attendance was 53,679. Seattle has never lost in front of a home crowd larger than 50,000. "It was a great contingent of fans from Vancouver as well that followed their team," Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. "It had a tremendous atmosphere." As a result of the win, Sounders FC (6-4-3, fourth place in Western Conference) also took the lead in the Cascadia Cup. They sit in first place, above the Portland Timbers in second and Vancouver in third, in the fan-created tournament. The Whitecaps (4-5-4, seventh place) return home for two consecutive matches, on June 15 and 19 against the New England Revolution and Chivas USA, respectively. "Our home form has been very good, so we need to perform really well in those games," Rennie said. "It would be nice to get six points, and I think were definitely capable of that." ' ' '
