Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes opted out of his contract with the New York Mets on Saturday, walking away from $47.5 million guaranteed through the 2018 season to become a free agent.Cespedes, 31, hit .280 and led the Mets with 31 home runs and 86 RBIs during the 2016 season.Mets officials expected Cespedes decision and are pessimistic they will re-sign the slugger because of their aversion to offering a long-term deal.Cespedes originally was acquired by the Mets from the Detroit Tigers for Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa at the non-waiver trade deadline in 2015. That season, Cespedes helped the Mets become the first team in MLB history to reach the World Series after ranking last in the majors in runs scored on July 31. Cespedes then re-signed with the Mets -- receiving a three-year, $75 million deal. That agreement gave him the right to opt out after collecting $27.5 million in 2016.The Mets would sorely miss Cespedes bat if he signs elsewhere as a free agent. Since his debut on Aug. 1, 2015, the Mets are 106-74 when Cespedes is in the starting lineup and 18-23 when he is not.The Mets acquired Jay Bruce from the Reds on Aug. 1 at the non-waiver trade deadline, in part to cover themselves for next season in the event Cespedes opted out and departed. This week, the Mets picked up Bruces $13 million team option for 2017. If Cespedes signs elsewhere, the Mets do have a full roster of outfielders with Curtis Granderson, Bruce, Michael Conforto, Juan Lagares and Brandon Nimmo.Still, the primary outfielders -- Granderson, Bruce and Conforto -- as well as Nimmo bat from the left side. The Mets would be in the market for a righty-hitting first baseman/corner outfielder if Cespedes signs elsewhere. The plan is to give the lefty-hitting Lucas Duda the primary workload at first base, so the acquisition likely would be more of a platoon type than a higher-end free agent such as Mark Trumbo.Mets officials are leery of offering a longer-term deal to Cespedes because they are concerned about what type of work ethic they will get once he has a long-term, guaranteed pact. The Mets are expected to make one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offers to Cespedes and second baseman Neil Walker at Mondays deadline. They would recoup supplemental first-round draft picks if those players ultimately land with other teams.Cespedes was selected as an All-Star for the second time in his career in 2016, although he was unable to participate in the game because of a right quadriceps injury that lingered during the seasons second half. He nonetheless reached the 30-homer plateau for the second time in his career, falling narrowly shy of the combined 35 long balls he hit with the Tigers and Mets in 2015.Thats a big piece to miss, manager Terry Collins recently said.Clearance Nike Shoes From China .
