EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After spending about a half-hour addressing Michigan States atrocious season and what the Spartans need to do to rebound, coach Mark Dantonio provided some unexpected clarity about the quarterback situation.Brian Lewerke is the favorite to start in 2017.I think hes done enough to warrant him to be the guy to beat out, Dantonio said. Hes the guy.Lewerke missed all of November with a broken leg after showing promise in limited duty as a redshirt freshman. Michigan State loses senior Tyler OConnor, who made most of the starts at quarterback this season. Lewerke started twice and Damion Terry started once.Michigan State won the Big Ten in 2015 behind quarterback Connor Cook, but with Cook now in the NFL, the Spartans fell to 3-9 this season. Lewerke completed 31 of 57 passes for 381 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and an interception.Probably would have been our guy through the last four games, Dantonio said.Lewerkes two starts came in October losses to Northwestern and Maryland. OConnor started the next game against Michigan, but Lewerke came on and played well in the fourth quarter. That was his final game of the season, however. Terry will be a fifth-year senior next year, and he started this seasons finale at Penn State.Damions been in and out with injuries and he played well in the Penn State game, Dantonio said. But hes got to maintain his health.Messiah deWeaver, who redshirted this season, could also contribute at some point. The final question of Dantonios news conference was actually about deWeaver. Dantonio talked a bit about him before changing the subject to Lewerke and the potential hed shown. It was then that he said Lewerke is entering next year a bit ahead of everyone else in the pecking order.Lewerke has been expected back for spring practice, and Dantonio updated his status earlier in Thursdays news conference.Hes out of the boot and hes walking and hell progress from there, Dantonio said. Probably come back here after break and be able to be moving some, rehabbing.Michigan States fall was swift this past season after the Spartans won the Big Ten in 2013 and 2015. They hadnt had any kind of down year since 2012, when they barely qualified for a bowl. That was after the departure of Kirk Cousins and before Cook blossomed into a star at quarterback. The 2016 season was a similar situation, with Michigan State struggling to replace a standout passer. Only this time, the record was even worse.Quarterbacks obviously are a big part of everything, and thats not to lay everything on our quarterback position, but all youve got to say is we played three quarterbacks this year, Dantonio said. What would you expect? And all three of them were injury related, all three of them injury related in the end. Somebody got knocked out here, knocked out there. So thats not occurred since weve been here.Game notes Dantonio says hes not planning any changes to his coaching staff. Its the same staff we won the Big Ten championship that everybody was celebrating last year, he said.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 .---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtristerStitched Padres Jerseys . Chip Kelly could make a big difference in your fantasy football leagues this year.Yes, the same Chip Kelly who became the subject of most of the football worlds humor and scorn by the end of his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, a time that saw him ditch several high-profile players while installing his unique system in the NFL for the first time. But he also was arguably the most fantasy-friendly coach in the NFL during his time in Philly, and that impact shouldnt be underestimated as he moves to the Bay Area to coach the San Francisco 49ers. So which players stand to benefit most from his arrival?WRs Torrey Smith and Bruce EllingtonIts never simple to compare teams across years in the NFL, as players, coaches and league-wide trends change, but when comparing the years prior to Kellys arrival in Philadelphia (2011-12) with his almost-three-year time on the sidelines (2013-15), there are some obvious improvements with fantasy implications.Kelly lasted one week shy of three seasons with the Eagles, and if you cut the final week off of the previous three seasons before Kellys arrival, the difference in offensive production is noteworthy. His Eagles threw for more touchdowns, didnt fumble as often, and made bigger plays after the catch, all while logging more snaps, which equal more opportunities for fantasy points. And if you consider just his prime years in Philly, the production his teams displayed stands out, as does the volume. Compare 2011-12 to 2013-14.During those fist two seasons, his receivers became fantasy superstars. In 2013, DeSean Jackson and Riley Cooper were WR Nos. 14 and 28, respectively (using ESPN standard-scoring points per game), while in 2014, Jeremy Maclin was No. 11 and Jordan Matthews was No. 30. Even in the disastrous 2015 season, Matthews was the No. 33 receiver over the first 16 weeks, matching Kellys stay with the team.So then why is Smith being taken 43rd and Ellington 91st among wideouts in ESPN drafts? Even if you think Smith will perform like a WR2 in a good Kelly offense or a bad receiver in a bad Kelly offense, he should be a top-40 wide receiver with upside for more.Smith is still only 27, and he never finished outside of the top-35 wide receivers before last season, when he finished 48th ... and thats where hes being drafted this season. If hes healthy for even 12 to 14 games, hes being drafted at his floor, while his ceiling is as high as it can be in a new offense with more fantasy-friendly playcalling. And while Ellington certainly hasnt done anything to prove hell be an every-down force in the NFL, hes a projected starter and has the kick-returner mentality to take advantage of an offense that opens up space for receivers after the catch. If youre getting him for free in any remotely shallow draft, whats the downside? Make him one of your last picks and bank on an offensive mastermind finding ways to get him open in space.Defense and special teamsHowever, maybe the biggest opportunity for value on draft day is with the Niners defense and special teams. Currently, the 49ers are being taken 28th among defenses in our live draft results, meaning there are very, very few leagues where theyre even a consideration. But Kellys teams have always been opportunistic, and thats the key to success in fantasy football for a D/ST. Lets compare the same 2010-12 split (excluding the final week) when compared to Kellys tenure.Kellys D/ST forced more turnovers, scored more touchdowns, and ranked higher in fantasy points despite being a less-than-stellar real defense. No team lost more fantasy points for yards allowed over those three seasons than the Eagles, and they were one of only 100 teams to lose points in the points allowed category for fantasy, but as you can see, that doesnt matter when a team is scoring regularly and forcing turnovers.dddddddddddd.A good defense that doesnt make big plays isnt the best target in fantasy football. Yes, limiting yards and points leads to a safe floor, but turnovers and touchdowns are week-winning plays, and Kelly preaches those things to his defenders and special-teams players. Especially on a week when theyll face a limited offense unlikely to post big numbers (as they will in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams), a couple of sacks, a couple of turnovers and a touchdown mean you have a top fantasy defense and an advantage over your opponent. The main reason Kellys defenses generate so many fantasy points is the number of snaps they face. The offense plays fast, and that means the other team gets the ball back more quickly. Over time, this leads to more opportunities for the defense to be on the field and make plays. You have a higher chance of winning a raffle the more entries you have, and similarly, you have a higher chance of big defensive plays the more your defense is on the field.Again, this isnt great for real football, but were not playing real football. Were playing fantasy football, and the Niners will have what we want this season. If you wait on your defense and are left uninspired by the options on the board, draft the 49ers for Week 1 against the Rams and make another decision with your waiver options if youre not feeling confident about road games against the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks in Weeks 2 and 3. But keep the Niners defense in mind as a streaming option or just stick with them in deeper leagues as a risk-reward play. The questions that remainUltimately, we cant be sure that this iteration of the Chip Kelly system will be better than the last or that it will be anything but a total mess. But with everyone on the offense apart from Carlos Hyde being drafted as if the Niners will be the worst team in the league, there are opportunities for fantasy profit for those willing to take a risk.Whoever winds up starting under center will be a streaming option at quarterback, especially if its the incredibly athletic Colin Kaepernick. Remember that this is an offense that produced the No. 3 QB in all of fantasy in terms of points per game in 2013 ... and his name was Nick Foles. And while Hyde is being drafted at a respectable spot in live drafts, theres no reason to shy away from him. If hes healthy, hell get carries, and we saw glimpses of his ability at the start of last season before injuries stole the rest of his 2015 campaign. If what we saw in Week 1 of last season is anything like what he can do in a Kelly offense, Hyde could be an RB1 and a game-changer for those who draft him.But the receivers and the D/ST are particularly poised to be the draft-day values who set your team apart and give you an advantage on league mates drafting the same, boring, predictable players they always draft. More people have drafted Calvin Johnson and Martavis Bryant than Ellington so far this summer, while two receivers from the extremely mediocre Minnesota passing game are going ahead of Smith in drafts.Theres no profit in taking a predictable player at his predictable draft spot, especially when dealing with bench spots that are quickly shuffled as the season progresses. Take a chance on the upside of a fantasy-friendly coach taking over an offense and defense that are being priced at their floors in drafts. ' ' '
