NEW YORK -- Ryan Harrison, a 24-year-old American who has struggled to approach the expectations placed on him, played the match of his life on Wednesday at the US Open.Harrison stunned No. 5-seeded Milos Raonic 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-5, 6-1 in the biggest upset of the tournament so far. A raucous capacity crowd ?of 8,200 at the tournaments new Grandstand stadium was thrilled with the result. Its so cool, Harrison said. The first two sets, when you have a crowd behind you like that, youre just playing on adrenaline. It was incredible. For the first time, the ATP World Tours No. 120-ranked player finds himself in the third round of a Grand Slam event. And he had to qualify his way into the event.According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Harrison is the first American qualifier in the Open era to defeat a top-five seed at the US Open.?It was only the second time in 28 attempts that Harrison has beaten a top-10 player. Its mental maturity, a little bit of stabilization with everything around me that is allowing me to play with a sense of calm and also with excitement, said Harrison, who turned pro nearly a decade ago and reached a top ranking of 43rd in 2012. My personality is a very fiery one. I like to be really intense when Im competing, flirt with that line of getting so intense that it [was] taking me away from what I was trying to accomplish.Until Monday, Harrison hadnt won any main-draw match at any major since the 2013 French Open. Raonic, a finalist this year at Wimbledon, had won 11 consecutive second-round matches in majors. After winning the first-set tiebreaker, the Canadian seemed to labor with injuries. There was a lengthy visit from the trainer to work on Raonics wrist and later massage his quad muscle.I was my own worst enemy today, Raonic said. I tried the best I could to find my way out of it. My body didnt let me.While he was certainly helped by his opponents myriad problems, Harrison played cleanly after recovering from a double fault that ceded the opening set.Harrison wound up with 33 unforced errors, making merely one in the final set of the 3?-hour match. Raonics total was 62, including a whopping 21 in the third set alone.I didnt create this pressure for myself or this kind of stress on myself, Raonic acknowledged. He did that.In the third round, Harrison will face 44th-ranked Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up. Baghdatis eliminated 32nd-seeded Benoit Paire of France 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 on Wednesday. Not really a whole lot of time for reflection in this sport, because things change so quickly, Harrison said. You play a bad match on Friday, all of a sudden todays win feels a long ways away.Last week, Harrison and his younger sibling Christian, 22, became the first pair of brothers to both qualify for the US Open. How cool, the older Harrison said, is it to have him with me at the Open? While Christian lost in the first round on Tuesday, Ryan took pleasure in being joined in the third round by a couple of other Americans: No. 20 John Isner beat Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-3, and No. 26 Jack Sock defeated Mischa Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.Good thing for Ryan. He has been around for a while, but hes still very young, Isner said. Good thing hes figuring it out again. The Associated Press contributed to this report.?Willy Caballero Chelsea Jersey . "It doesnt get any better than that," Giambi said. "Im speechless." The Indians are roaring toward October. DETROIT -- On a night when it seemed the 27th out might never come for the Cleveland Indians, Chris Perez threw one last fastball to Miguel Cabrera and hoped the Detroit slugger would hit it on the ground. "He chopped it," Perez said. "I wanted him to put something in play, but down. Luckily he did." Perez got Cabrera to hit a game-ending groundout with two on in the ninth inning, and Cleveland held on for a 7-6 win over the Tigers on Saturday night. Ubaldo Jimenez outpitched Justin Verlander, but Detroits late rally forced the Indians to sweat out a tense finish. Perez came on to pitch the ninth with Cleveland ahead 7-5. He was in a jam after a one-out error by first baseman Nick Swisher and a single by Omar Infante, but second baseman Jason Kipnis made a sparkling play behind second, fielding Austin Jacksons grounder up the middle and flipping behind his back to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for a force. "Awesome -- that saved me," Perez said. "It made up for Swishs play. Baseball kind of works out that way. He picked me up." That was out No. 26. The Indians still needed one more, and Torii Hunters RBI single gave Miguel Cabrera another trip to the plate with men on first and second. The count ran from 0-2 to 3-2, but Cabrera -- who entered the day leading the majors in batting average and RBIs -- hit a slow grounder to third to end it. It was Perezs sixth save. "We fought tooth and nail to get the right guy up there," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Ill take that situation every time, but even that guy cant come through every time. We just put ourselves in too big a hole." Verlander (4-3) was erratic early, allowing three runs in the first two innings. He settled down a bit after that, but the Indians took a 6-1 lead before Detroit closed the gap with a four-run seventh. Jimenez (3-2) allowed a run and three hits in six innings, striking out eight with one walk. Hes won three straight starts for the first time since the Indians acquired him in a trade in 2011. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo homer for Detroit. Swisher opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first, and Jason Giambi drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. That was Verlanders third walk of the first inning. The Detroit ace got the first two outs of the second but allowed another run when Kipnis hit a single and Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a double. "My fastball control just wasnt good at all," Verlander said. "I was trying to get ahead with the fastball and thenn throw off-speed stuff, hoping I could grind out six innings, but I didnt even do that.dddddddddddd" Verlander allowed six hits and five walks in five innings, striking out seven and leaving after 110 pitches. After Peraltas homer got the Tigers on the board in the third, Cleveland added an unearned run off Verlander in the fifth to make it 4-1. Swisher walked to lead off that inning, and Carlos Santana hit what looked like a double play grounder to first baseman Prince Fielder, who stepped on first and threw to second to trap Swisher between bases. Miguel Cabrera, the third baseman, was involved in the rundown because a defensive shift had him playing close to second, and he threw the ball away for an error. Swisher eventually scored on a two-out single by Mark Reynolds. Asdrubal Cabreras RBI single in the sixth made it 5-1, and pinch-hitter Mike Aviles added a run-scoring single of his own in the seventh, but the Cleveland bullpen almost gave up the lead. Jimenez left after 93 pitches, and Nick Hagadone allowed a double and two walks to start the Detroit seventh. Cody Allen came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Brayan Pena. Infante added a two-run triple and scored on Jacksons groundout to make it 6-5. A sacrifice fly by Giambi in the eighth gave Cleveland an insurance run the Indians would end up needing. When Jimenez was acquired two years ago, the Indians hoped they were getting an ace who could help them compete with teams like the Tigers. The right-hander hasnt come close to expectations, but hes pitching better now. "I think its all about my mechanics," Jimenez said. "I think the last three games Ive been able to repeat my mechanics with every pitch." This was Clevelands seventh game this season against a former Cy Young Award winner, and the Indians are 6-1 in those games.
