England flanker Tom Wood feels Eddie Jones critical post-World Cup comments of him were blown out of proportion. The Northampton back-row forward has been named in Jones starting line-up for Saturdays opening autumn international against South Africa at Twickenham, live on Sky Sports. It is the first time Wood has been selected since Jones took over the national job and comes nine months after he was labelled distinctly average by the head coach. Any damage done by the comments seems to have been repaired, with Jones happy to compare Wood to Rambo due to his long hair and beard and restore him to his team for what is a key fixture.I think an awful lot was made of that and I just gave an easy headline, Wood told Sky Sports News HQ. Eddie just said that I hadnt been good enough and that I needed to improve if I wanted to get back in.I knew myself that I needed to do that as well and I got my head down and worked hard. We were in contact throughout. Wood has been in fine form for Northampton in the Aviva Premiership Eddie told me the door was never closed on me and that I was getting closer as I was improving and working hard and so I just kept doing what I was doing.Woods international exile has lasted more than a year and he accepts his chance to restore his reputation with England has come through injuries elsewhere.Jones will be missing James Haskell, Jack Clifford, Sam Jones, Mike Williams and Maro Itoje and Wood is happy to be the beneficiary. Wood was labelled average by Eddie Jones Ive just been quietly working away so that I was ready, he said. The back row is an attritional area of the pitch and there is always a chance there will be injuries. So I knew if I kept working hard and making improvements that Id get a chance but I know this is a real opportunity for me to make my mark. Melbourne Victory head to Bentleigh Greens for an FFA Cup quarter-final without Michael Essien but Kevin Muscat is confident his squad has enough firepower to see off the state league premiers and challenge for higher honours.Ghanaian midfielder Essien, a two-time English Premier League winner with Chelsea, turned down the chance to become Victorys marquee guest player last week.Coach Muscat said he was disappointed the move didnt come to fruition but wasnt scrambling to find a last-gasp signing. It would have been a bonus, he said.Weve done everything in our powers (to sign Essien) ... its well past us now and we moved on.Were very pleased with the squad weve assembled and looking forward were hopeful that its going to be enough for us to challenge and win trophies this season. The move means Victory will start the season without their full complement of five foreigners for the first time in three years.Muscat said his door wasnt closed to a late arrival but it wasnt a priority given what hes seen on the training track.Attackers James Troisi and Marco Rojas, in their second stints with the club, have impressed in non-competitive outings to date and should start against John Annastasiadis side in Tuesday nights Cup date.ddddddddddddMuscat said hed seen a marked lift in intensity in training sessions on Goschs Paddock as the quarter-final and the A-League opener, against Brisbane on October 7, drew near. Its been tense, he said. The playing group has put almost in 12 weeks of work and they sense the games about to start and they want to be included. Our attitude has to be right.
