After clinching the NL West title, the Dodgers lost five of six during the final week of the season, costing them a shot at home-field advantage in this series. That could be important because they went 53-28 at home and 38-43 on the road this season. ... The Dodgers outscored the Nats 26-21 in the season series, including a three-game sweep at home. ... Scherzer did not face the Dodgers this season. ... One key to the series could be how the Nationals starting pitchers other than Scherzer do, particularly Gonzalez, who struggled much of the year but gets to face a Dodgers lineup that does not fare well against lefties. ... The architect of the Dodgers, Stan Kasten, helped build the Nationals from a 100-loss team to a playoff participant while he was their president. ... Nationals manager Dusty Baker played for the Dodgers from 1976-82; his first base coach, Davey Lopes, was a teammate in Los Angeles.---Big Picture:Dodgers: With a $234 million opening day payroll, highest in the majors, Los Angeles (91-71) reached the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year in Dave Roberts first season as manager. The Dodgers have won four straight NL West titles, a first for the storied franchise, and surpassed 90 wins for the fourth season in a row. But they are still looking for their first trip to the World Series since Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser & Co. won it all as big underdogs in 1988. Los Angeles was beaten in the NLCS three times from 2008-13, then lost in the NLDS each of the past two years. ... Roberts and Tom Lasorda (1977) are the only rookie managers to lead the club to a division title. ... Gonzalez had 90 RBI for the 10th consecutive season, becoming the only major leaguer to do so. ... Grandal, Seager, Justin Turner and Pederson gave the Dodgers four players with 25 or more home runs for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 1997. ... The Dodgers put 28 players on the disabled list this season, the most for any team since at least 1987. ... Roberts used a franchise record-tying 55 players, including 31 pitchers. ... Seagers 193 hits were the most by a big league rookie since 2001. ... Dodgers pitchers recorded 1,510 strikeouts, a major league record.Nationals: Washington (95-67) won the NL East for the third time in five years, each time with a different manager -- in 2016, with Baker in his first year with the team; in 2014, with Matt Williams; in 2012, with Davey Johnson. But the team has yet to win a playoff series, losing the NLDS to St. Louis four years ago, then San Francisco two years ago. This time, Washington led nearly wire-to-wire, briefly sitting in second place in early May before taking over first in the division for good and never really being challenged. The strength of the team most of the way was its starting rotation, anchored by Scherzer, a strong contender to add an NL Cy Young Award to the 2013 AL honor he won for Detroit. But the teams top pitcher for the first half of the season was Stephen Strasburg, who finished the year on the disabled list and is unavailable for the NLDS. GM Mike Rizzo, who famously shut down the right-hander before the 2012 playoffs to protect his surgically repaired arm, says its possible Strasburg could pitch if the Nationals advance. There are big questions about the lineup right now because of some injury concerns. Coming off his unanimous selection as 2015 NL MVP, Harper took a step back. He missed four games late with a sore left thumb, then went 1 for 11 with 8 Ks in the last three games of the regular season. Murphy hasnt started since Sept. 17 because of a strained glute muscle and its not clear how healthy hell be against Los Angeles. All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos is done for the season after tearing up his right knee in September. After all sorts of bullpen problems in the teams previous two trips to the playoffs, Rizzo added Melancon at the trade deadline.---Watch For:- Ace In The Hole. As sensational as Kershaw has been throughout his career, hes struggled in the postseason. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP is 2-6 with a 4.59 ERA in seven playoff series since 2008. He was 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA against the Mets in last years NLDS, which the Dodgers lost in five games. It remains to be seen if they would start him on three days rest in a potential Game 4 against the Nats. Kershaw missed more than two months with a back injury before returning in September. While he was out, the Dodgers surged into first place past slumping San Francisco.- Young Star. Trea Turner added energy, elite speed and some surprising pop to the Nationals lineup when he became a fixture in the leadoff spot during the summer. Hes only 23 and inexperienced, yes -- just 347 major league at-bats -- and is learning a new position (center field) on the fly after being a middle infielder. But he might be Washingtons biggest threat on offense at the moment.Glen Rice Jersey . Perez, 35, posted a 1-2 record with a 3.69 earned-run average in 19 relief appearances last season. His season ended Aug. 9 due to a torn ligament in his left elbow. Perez joins infielder Andy LaRoche and catcher Mike Nickeas with minor-league agreements for 2014 that include invitations to attend spring training. It is a cliché dragged out by fans and pundits regularly when discussions take place around which teams are better than others.CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- First-year Miami coach Mark Richt never talked to his team about qualifying for a bowl game with a victory at Virginia, figuring the Hurricanes had three games left to ensure a .500 record and a chance to play in the postseason. When Brad Kaaya threw two touchdown passes and Mark Walton ran for 111 yards and another score Saturday, leading Miami to a 34-14 victory against Virginia, and bowl eligibility, his players admitted to be delighted, and to wanting to keep the wins coming,Its awesome. Awesome, right guard Danny Isadora said. Got to keep winning. They did it for the first time at Virginia with a balanced attack that produced 222 rushing yards and 228 through the air.Kaaya hit David Njoku for a 7-yard score and Ahmmon Richards for a 77-yarder, the latter making Kaaya just the second quarterback to throw for more than 9,000 yards in his career at Miami (6-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Only Ken Dorsey, with 9,565, has more.Richards touchdown, on a short third-down route, gave the Hurricanes a 27-14 lead, and the defense did the rest.It feels great, honestly, the freshman said of qualifying for the postseason. You work so hard and you want to have a payoff. Its a great way for our seniors to go out, but right now, were focusing on N.C. State. The Cavaliers (2-8, 1-5) honored fourth- and fifth-year seniors before their final home game, but lost their fifth in a row. Virginia trailed just 17-14 at halftime, but mustered only 28 yards in the third quarter as Miami pulled away.Virginia fumbled the ball away four times, all in the second half.Clearly Im not getting through yet to our team in those closer moments where the game is kind of going back and forth, first-year Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall said.Waltons 15-yard run, capped as he arched his back to reach the end zone, essentially put the game away with 11:17 remaining.dddddddddddd. It gave the sophomore 21 touchdowns in 23 career games, and 11 touchdowns this season.I think the blocking was good, for the most part, but there were a few times where he was just ripping through tackles and just wasnt going to be denied a first down and kept a couple of drives going, Richt said.THE TAKEAWAYMiami: The Hurricanes reached bowl eligibility by getting stout performances on both sides of the ball. They rushed for 222 yards and passed for 228, and on defense sacked Virginia starting quarterback Kurt Benkert five times, including a strip sack by Corn Elder that Joe Jackson recovered.Virginia: Benkert continued to be restless under pressure and had another rough day. He completed 16 of 27 passed for 143 yards before being removed in the fourth quarter. The swap allowed former starter Matt Johns to finish, and he received a rousing ovation when he entered his final career home game.WHERE THERES SMOKEVirginias Taquan Smoke Mizzell caught three passes for 27 yards, and became the first player in ACC history to record 1,500 career rushing yards and 1,500 career receiving yards. He has 1,831 rushing yards (21st all-time at Virginia) and 1,517 receiving yards (13th).The milestone came on a pass from Johns in the fourth quarter. One of Johns goals when he got into the game, he said, was to get Smoke that record. Man, I love that dude. He plays so hard and he caught a couple passes and got the 10 yards that he needed. Hes one of the best football players Ill ever play with.UP NEXTMiami makes its first trip to Raleigh, North Carolina since
