RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina lawmakers took steps Thursday to set aside a half-million dollars for the legal defense of a law limiting protections for LGBT people as a judge sought to streamline a cluster of lawsuits it has inspired.Republican lawmakers were mapping out the end of the session, including possible changes to the law known as House Bill 2, which has attracted high-profile critics including the NBA. The session could end this weekend. But there was no appetite to change the provision requiring transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate in schools, universities and many other public buildings. The law also excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from statewide anti-discrimination protections.Pressure to change the law has come from several quarters including NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who said earlier this month that there needed to be progress on changing the law this summer to ensure the league keeps its 2017 All-Star Game in Charlotte. The league issued a joint statement late Thursday with the Charlotte Hornets saying they were doubtful that proposed changes would go far enough. We have been engaged in dialogue with numerous groups at the city and state levels, but we do not endorse the version of the bill that we understand is currently before the legislature, the statement said.Legislative leaders were weighing possible adjustments, while trying to determine whether theres enough support to get the legislation to Gov. Pat McCrorys desk. McCrory has urged lawmakers to repeal a provision preventing workers from using state law to sue over workplace discrimination. The governor has been public in what he has asked us to look at, House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, said Thursday. We are reviewing those matters and its just still in discussion.Moore confirmed other changes are being considered but he declined to elaborate. The Senate also approved a plan to give McCrorys office $500,000 to defend the law in court, by transferring money from a disaster relief fund. The measure still must pass the House.Entertainers including Bruce Springsteen canceled concerts to protest the law, while scores of business leaders signed a letter seeking its repeal. Rallies to support the law, meanwhile, drew thousands of conservatives to Raleigh.Other legislators have said possible changes include increasing criminal penalties for people who commit sexual assaults in bathrooms and locker rooms. There also could be dispensations for transgender people who have undergone sex reassignment surgery but were born in the few states where the sex on a birth certificate cant be changed.Gay rights advocates held a news conference to say nothing short of the laws repeal would suffice. There is only one fix for H.B. 2, and its full and total repeal, said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin. If they choose not to and Gov. McCrory and his political cronies run out the clock on this short session, they wont be able to outrun the voters of this state in November.McCrory discussed the law privately with Democratic legislators at the Executive Mansion.Sen. Floyd McKissick, D-Durham, described the discussion as candid. But he said Democrats remained concerned that proposed changes dont fix fundamental problems with the law.A spokesman for McCrorys re-election campaign, Ricky Diaz, later said in an email: Any Democrat standing with the Human Rights Campaign and other out-of-state liberal interest groups by refusing any compromise is attempting to drive the NBA All-Star Game from North Carolina.Transgender residents and the U.S. Department of Justice have challenged the law in court, while McCrory, legislative leaders and a citizen group filed lawsuits to defend it. Legislative leaders will have their own legal expenses after filing a lawsuit separate from the governors.Federal Judge Louise Wood Flanagan, who was overseeing lawsuits by the legislative leaders and citizens group, on Wednesday ordered that they be sent to another federal court hearing separate challenges to the law. Her move increased the likelihood that at least four of the five cases will end up before one judge. It also denied efforts to consolidate the two cases with the lawsuit filed by McCrory before a different judge. The risk of inconsistent adjudication is high and the relative expense of multiple proceedings, as compared to a single proceeding, is plain, Flanagan wrote. Getting set to go their separate ways for a short Christmas break, the Raptors coach credited his team for their effort on a seemingly impossible three-game road trip, urging them to build on that success when they get back to work at the end of the week. Andre Reed Bills Jersey . Supported by three-run homers from Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos, the young right-hander went seven strong innings in the Washington Nationals 8-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. SEATTLE -- A night that began with cheers for new Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. echoing through Safeco Field ended with chants for Shawn OMalley, a kid that grew up a few hours southeast of Seattle idolizing the Hall of Famer.A little surreal for OMalley? Yep. Deserved? Absolutely. The fact it ended like that, it just seemed like a Griffey type of night, OMalley said. A home run to go up, late in the innings, it was just fitting.OMalley capped Seattles comeback with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Mariners rallied from a four-run deficit for an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.A few hours after the Mariners retired Griffeys No. 24 during an emotional pregame ceremony, OMalley sent another charge through Safeco Field. OMalley turned on an 0-1 pitch from Deolis Guerra and drove it into the right-field seats for his second home run of the season.Moments later, OMalley made a backhanded stop deep in the hole at shortstop to get Andrelton Simmons for the first out of the eighth inning and briefly Safeco Field began chanting OMalleys name.It was pretty hard to miss. It was pretty loud, OMalley said. That was pretty special, pretty cool. Never had that happen before. The conclusion to the day was celebratory for the Mariners, but it certainly didnt start that way. Seattle fell behind 3-0 on Mike Trouts 21st home run of the season in the first inning, and trailed 5-1 after Trouts RBI triple and Albert Pujols sacrifice fly in the third.Arguably the best center fielder of this generation was doing his best to upstage a night belonging to one of the best center fielders ever. But the Mariners chipped away at the deficit, taking the words of Griffey from his pregame speech when he looked at the Seattle dugout and told this current crop to keep fighting as it hangs on the fringe of the wild-card race. Guillermo Heredia hit the first home run of his career leading off the third inning and Franklin Gutierrez added a two-run shot in the fifth to pull within 6-4.Seattle missed an opportunity in the sixth inning by leaving the bases loaded. Reliever Mike Morin feell behind 3-0 to Gutierrez, who was given the freedom to swing and popped up to shortstop for the second out.dddddddddddd Robinson Cano then popped out to right field to end the threat. The Mariners finally took advantage of the shaky pitching in the seventh. Jose Valdez (0-1) opened the seventh getting Nelson Cruz, but then issued three straight walks to load the bases. Valdez was called up from the minors on Saturday. He looked good against Cruz. He threw some really good breaking balls but then just lost his release point, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.Leonys Martins sacrifice fly off Guerra pulled Seattle within 6-5 before OMalleys shot.Confidence has gotten into him, Seattle manager Scott Servais said of OMalley. He believes hes a big league player and I think youre seeing it in front of our eyes.BULLPEN PICKUPDrew Storen (2-3) got the final out of the seventh to pick up the victory and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his fourth save. But the star for Seattle was Cody Martin, who pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Taijuan Walker. Martin allowed only two hits, one of them an infield single.Everybody is having a good time and were like a little family out there, Martin said. We just have a great time during the games.ROSTER SHUFFLEAngels: RHP Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment on Saturday after giving up six runs in the first inning a night earlier. Lincecum was 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts with the Angels.Mariners: Seattle made a pair of trades, acquiring Arquimedes Caminero from Pittsburgh and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Toronto for players to be named later. Caminero is expected to report to Seattle on Monday, while Venditte is headed for Triple-A.UP NEXTAngels: Matt Shoemaker (6-11) will go for his second straight victory. Over his last 15 starts, Shoemaker has a 2.85 ERA.Mariners: James Paxton (3-5) looks to build on his last start when he allowed one run in eight innings against Boston but ended up being left out of the decision.
