ATLANTA -- Cole Hamels said he "totally forgot" Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was on the verge of his 1,000th win. Hamels said theres been too much losing in Philadelphia this season to focus on individual milestones. Hamels took a shutout into the ninth inning, Cody Asche hit a three-run homer and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 Monday night to give Manuel his milestone win. "Truly I think it hasnt been talked about much in here just because we havent been playing well," Hamels said. "Weve just been focused on just trying to win a game and then going from there. "Its a tremendous accomplishment. That type of milestone is pretty huge." The game was overshadowed by a fatal fall at Turner Field. Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee said a man died after falling more than 60 feet from an upper-level platform to a parking lot. He said the fall that occurred before 9 p.m. appeared to be an accident. Hamels (5-13) struck out nine with one walk while allowing six hits and one run as the Phillies snapped a streak of 11 straight road losses. Philadelphias players signed a base with "1,000" in Phillies red. The base sat in Manuels office after the game. "Its definitely quite an achievement," Manuel said. "Like I told the players, theyre the ones who make it happen. "Im sure later on it will probably mean a lot more to me than right now." Asche, a left-handed hitter, pulled a fastball from Julio Teheran (9-6) about three rows deep into the right-field seats in the sixth inning for his second homer. Asche hit his homer two pitches after Teheran hit Darin Ruf with a pitch. Chase Utley, who led off the inning with a single, also scored on the homer. Asche singled off Anthony Vavaro in the ninth, stole second and scored on a single by Carlos Ruiz. Hamels didnt allow more than one baserunner in any inning until the seventh, when he walked Dan Uggla with one out after Chris Johnson singled. B.J. Upton then hit into a double play to end the inning. Upton, who struck out to end the second with Brian McCann on third base following his leadoff double, is 7 for 73 (.096) with runners in scoring position. Hes hitting .191 overall. Justin Upton led off the ninth with a double to left field. With two outs, Chris Johnson hit a ground-rule double to right field to spoil Hamels shutout bid. Despite Hamels poor record, the left-hander still commands respect in the Braves clubhouse. "We know any time we play the Phillies that this could happen with the arms that they run out there," Johnson said. "Give all the credit to Cole Hamels tonight." Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the goal was to get Hamels out of the game. "We were hoping to get into the bullpen," Gonzalez said. "When you get into those games, sometimes getting into the bullpen helps you the rest of the series. And he didnt let us do that." Manuel said Hamels showed his determination to remain in the game in the top of the ninth. "He got his bat and his helmet and made sure he got up on deck real quick," Manuel said. "He was determined he was going to finish." The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the second. Hamels hit a one-out triple beyond the reach of B.J. Upton in centre field and scored on Jimmy Rollins single. With two outs, Utley singled and Domonic Brown walked, loading the bases, but Rufs groundout ended the inning. Teheran gave up four runs on six hits and one walk in six innings, ending his streak of four straight starts allowing no more than one earned run. McCann returned after sitting out two starts to rest his sore right knee. Justin Upton started after leaving Sundays game with cramping in his left hamstring. The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 48 minutes by rain. Chafee, the police spokesman, said it was unclear if wet conditions contributed to the fans fall. He said police received the report of the fall just before 9 p.m. When officers arrived, they located a man who appeared to have fallen 65 feet, or about six stories. The man was transported to Atlanta Medical Center and died of his injuries. The mans name was not immediately released. NOTES: The triple was the second of Hamels career. ... Nike Air Force 1 Clearance . LOUIS -- Theres no telling how these wacky World Series games will end. Englands stand-in captain Jos Buttler praised the solidity and adventure of two more understudies - the untried opening pair of James Vince and Sam Billings - for preparing the ground for a series victory against Bangladesh.Englands successful chase is the highest ever achieved at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, bettering Bangladeshs 227 for 8 against England in the 2011 World Cup.Buttler said that the lesson from their poor chase when they were defeated in the second ODI was that they needed to be less tentative, something they achieved in style as they extended a run that now stands at only one defeat in the last 12 ODIs where they have had to chase a target.Vince and Billings, a new opening pair that had to be cobbled together because Jason Roy couldnt shake off his injury, added 63 in 11.4 overs and, while it may not have shaken Bangladesh too much, it gave the batsmen in the dressing room a lot of confidence.Vince has not had a great series but had his moments in making 32 he made with five boundaries, even if he could not push on. Billings latched on to anything that gave him room to free his arms as he made 62 off 69 balls, laced with four boundaries and a six.I think we probably learnt form the other day when we were tentative, Buttler said. Guys were made aware of that. We had a good chat before we went out to bat. We wantedd to be aggressive.dddddddddddd I thought the two guys did that fantastically well. You need to get off to a good start. There were partnerships that built and in the end we ran with their momentum. We lost a few wickets that kept Bangladesh interested. We did enough. Chases havent been high here so to go and do that with a young and inexperienced side is a testament for us.Buttler said that going into the halfway mark, he knew that they could chase down 278 runs and told his teammates that they should just go for it, regardless of the outcome.I didnt it was going to be easy but I was confident. The start was going to be crucial. Even if we did lose, I wanted us to lose in the fashion the way we want to play: be aggressive, take the game to the opposition. The openers set the tone brilliantly, he said.Buttler said that their Chittagong experience from the 2014 World T20 where the dew was a huge factor in night games, was a piece of knowledge that they used to their advantage.Looking back to the 2014 T20 World Cup when we played here, there was a lot of dew. We knew the ball would skid a lot. We knew it would be easier to bat second. It was quite tacky at the start which suited our spinners, who bowled really well, he said. ' ' '
