CHASKA, Minn. -- The Latest on the Ryder Cup (all times local):8:05 p.m.The late comeback that pulled Europe within 5-3 after Round 1 bought captain Darren Clarke enough breathing room to get the last two of his six rookies on the course at the start of Round 2.His opening and anchor duos for Saturday mornings foursomes will be familiar: Rory McIlroy-Thomas Pieters and Sergio Garcia-Rafa Cabrera Bello, respectively, already played together in Round 1. In between those pairs, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose will split and take on a rookie each; Stenson will partner Matt Fitzpatrick and Rose will play with Chris Wood.U.S. captain Davis Love has only two rookies and both played in Round 1. As a result, his morning pairings will all be reprised from Round 1. In playing order, they are: Phil Mickelson-Rickie Fowler; Brandt Snedeker-Brooks Koepka; Jimmy Walker-Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth-Patrick Reed.---6:01 p.m.Take a bow, Rory McIlroy. After rolling in a 20-foot eagle putt on No. 16 to finish off Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, McIlroy turned to the partisan American crowd and bowed. Twice. It was an emphatic finish to an impressive afternoon rally for the Europeans at the Ryder Cup. McIlroy and Thomas Pieters beat Johnson and Kuchar 3 and 2 to close the afternoon session. The Europeans won three of the four matches in the afternoon after losing all four of the morning matches. The crowd at Hazeltine was fired up after the American sweep in the morning and McIlroy was only too happy to quiet them down in the afternoon in his second Ryder Cup on U.S. soil. This is definitely a little more hostile, McIlroy said. Reactions like that (bow) on the last, I just want to let people know how much it means to us.The United States holds a 5-3 lead headed into Saturday.---5 p.m.Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose turned the tables on Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in the opening match of afternoon four balls, earning Europes first point of the matches.Stenson made birdie to win the par-3 13th and Rose sealed the 5 and 4 victory with a birdie at 14. The win by the Olympic medal-winning Europeans -- Rose took gold in Rio; Stenson grabbed the silver -- avenged their loss to the American pair in morning foursomes. After a 4-0 U.S. sweep in foursomes, Europe is also leading in two of three matches still on the course.---4:30 p.m.The Americans appear to be letting their formidable morning lead slip away, but its not necessarily because they are playing poorly. In the case of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, they just are not playing quite as well as Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose.Spieth and Reed got the Americans off to a winning start in the morning by beating Stenson and Rose and came out of the afternoon gates with six birdies in the first 11 holes. But they also have two bogeys, while Stenson and Rose have birdied eight of 13 holes to lead 4 up going to the 14th.---3:42 p.m.After a rip-roaring morning, a hush has fallen over the Hazeltine crowd during the afternoon session at the Ryder Cup.Spaniards Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello have led the European charge back from a 4-0 deficit in foursomes, and now the emboldened Europeans are starting to get their swagger back.Garcia chipped in on No. 9 for a birdie that gave the pair a 4-up lead on J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore. And after the beleaguered Americans appeared to get a glimmer of hope when Moore drilled a putt for the pairs first birdie of the day on No. 10, Garcia responded with a birdie putt of his own.Garcia then raised his hand to his ear, playfully mocking the humbled fan base as he headed to No. 11.---3 p.m.Europe is bouncing back strongly from its whitewash in morning foursomes.Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose are 6 under through eighth holes and have a 2-up lead over Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in fourballs. Even more surprising is Rory McIlroy and rookie Thomas Pieters going 3 up over Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar through six holes.Europe leads in three matches, while U.S. rookie Brooks Koepka and Brandt Snedeker are 3-up through six holes.---2:20 p.m.Phil Mickelson earned the afternoon off after teaming with Rickie Fowler to win their opening match in a morning foursomes sweep by the U.S. team.He might have needed it after coming through when it may have mattered most for himself and the team.Certainly I felt more pressure heading into todays matches, Mickelson said. Given the buildup over the last couple years, the criticism, the comments, what have you, the pressure was certainly as great, or greater, than Ive ever felt.Playing in his 11th straight Ryder Cup, Mickelson took on the role of de facto captain for this team. But he came under fire this week for criticizing former captain Hal Sutton for matching him with Tiger Woods in the U.S. Ryder Cup loss 12 years ago.I could have copped out and asked to sit. That would have been a total weak move, and I wanted to get out there, Mickelson said. Put me out there. I enjoy that pressure.Mickelson and Fowler beat Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan, 1 up.---1:53 p.m.Danny Willett had a feeling he would hear it from the Hazeltine crowd after his brother penned a column for a British outlet lambasting American golf fans. The revved-up crowd obliged.Willett sat out the morning session, but was jeered on the first tee in the afternoon. The partisan American crowd chanted Will-etts broth-er! in response to Peter Willett, who called American fans pudgy, basement-dwelling irritants in a scathing column. Danny Willett spent the last two days apologizing for and distancing himself from his brothers words. But he responded well to the jeers in his first-ever Ryder Cup match. He was paired with Martin Kaymer against Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka in four-ball. After Koepka rolled in a birdie putt on the first hole, Willett responded with a long one of his own to keep the Europeans from falling behind.---12:45 p.m.Dont count the Europeans out just yet. That was the message from Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia after the U.S. swept the morning foursomes matches to go up 4-0 in the Ryder Cup.Its a different game we play in the afternoon and I think we are all ready, Kaymer said. We are fired up. We want to keep that trophy and bring it home to Europe.Kaymer and Garcia were on the losing end of their match to Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson, who closed them out, 4 and 2, on the 16th hole. The matches were played before massive crowds who were vocal in their support of the American team.Obviously they are very excited, Garcia said. They should be. But you know, its our job to hopefully quiet them down a little bit and see if we can do that this afternoon.---NoonThe U.S. team touched some rare air this morning, going 4-0 in a session for the first time since 1981.Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed got things rolling in the opening match of foursomes by beating Europes Olympic-medals duo of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. In the other three matches:Phil Mickelson-Rickie Fowler beat Rory McIlroy-Andy Sullivan, 1 up.Jimmy Walker-Zach Johnson beat Sergio Garcia-Martin Kaymer, 4 and 2.Dustin Johnson-Matt Kuchar beat Lee Westwood-Thomas Pieters, 5 and 4.The last sweep by a U.S. team was the afternoon four-ball session on the second day in 1981. And for all the toasts thrown around about greatest team ever, dont get any comparisons started. The 1981 team, which won 18 +-9 +, included Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino and Johnny Miller---11:35 a.m.The Americans are already on the board, scoring a pair of early wins in the morning foursomes round.Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed beat Europes Olympic medal-winning duo of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, 3 and 2. Rose, the gold medalist at the Rio Olympics, and playing partner Stenson, who won silver as well as the British Open, combined for only one birdie over the 16 holes played. Spieth and Reed had made five. The second U.S. point was even more impressive. U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar needed only 14 holes to put away Lee Westwood and rookie Thomas Pieters, 5 and 4.The United States is up in the third match and the last is all square.---11:05 a.m.How hungry for golf are Minnesotans?Very.More than 51,000 fans were crammed onto Hazeltine National Golf club before high noon for the first day of matches. The event was sold out months ago. Hazeltine has hosted four majors, two U.S. Opens (1970, 1991) and a pair of PGA Championships (2002, 2009; the last major held in the state). How nice are Minnesotans?More than 30,000 turned out for a Monday playoff in which between Payne Stewart beat Scott Simpson to decide the 1991 U.S. Open. Thats about five times the usual gallery for such extra sessions.Reed Mackenzie, then chairman at Hazeltine and subsequently at the U.S. Golf Association, explained it this way at the time: People would have thought it would be impolite not to be here for the playoff.---10:35 a.m.Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson have added some impressive bling to their collections this year, but so far its been anything but champagne wishes and caviar dreams for the European duo at Hazeltine.Rose won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics and Henrik Stenson won silver. But theyll have to step it up if they hope to bring the hardware home from the Ryder Cup. The Europeans went 1-down against Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed at the second hole and havent made up any ground since. Heading to the 13th, they have made only one and birdie, but the Americans quickly answered with one of their own.Rose and Stenson are 2 down in the match.---10:15 a.m.United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III said he has a strategy for how he will deploy vice captain Tiger Woods through the weekend. He says he believes that people will be watching Tiger watch golf, and expected the superstar could buoy certain pairings at crucial moments. So far so good.Woods has been following Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar in their foursome match against Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters. The American pair have stormed out to a 5-up lead after eight holes, with Johnsons putting leading the way.But Woods may also be having a cooling effect on Pieters in his first ever Ryder Cup match. The rookie has been shaky all morning, and having the most famous name -- and one of the most intense competitors -- in golf looking over his shoulder might not be helping him.---9:50 a.m.Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed have sent the Europeans a message: nothing will come easy at the Ryder Cup.After jumping out to a 3-up lead through eight holes, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose finally put themselves in position to win their first hole of the match on No. 9. After Rose rolled a long putt within less than two feet of the cup, Reed and Spieth made Stenson put it in the hole rather than concede it.Stenson calmly made it and had a wry grin on his face as he walked off the green 2 down.---9:15 a.m.Lefty can play right-handed, too. That wasnt an ideal situation for Phil Mickelson, of course, though he didnt have much of a choice. Mickelson and Fowler already were 1 down to Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan when Mickelson hooked his tee shot out-of-bounds on the par-5 sixth hole. Fowler nearly did the same on his tee shot (the third shot), except it stopped next to the fence.Mickelsons only choice was to flip around a wedge and play it right-handed. It squirted left toward the gallery. They didnt finish the hole.Europe was 2 up through six holes in that match.---8:55 a.m.Some morning fog and chilly Minnesota temperatures are making an already long Hazeltine course play even longer in the early going at the Ryder Cup.Temperatures hovered around 50 degrees as play got underway on Friday. The heavy air kept the tee shots a little shorter and the fog blanketing the course made the greens wet and slow on the first few holes.Europes rookie Thomas Pieters wore a stocking cap to stay warm. His partner, Lee Westwood, had a short par putt rim out to allow Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar to go 2-up after two holes. The American leadoff pair of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed had little difficulty acclimating to the chilly weather. Spieth rolled in birdie putts on Nos. 2 and 3 while playing off of Reed, who is wearing short sleeves, to take a 2-up lead on Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose.Forecasts call for sun and the temperature climbing to 70 degrees.---8:15 a.m.The Ryder Cup is known for its euphoric atmosphere, and Hazeltine is holding up its end of the bargain. The first tee has taken on the energy of a rock concert, with the DJ blasting Princes Lets Go Crazy before the sun had risen to fire up the home crowd. Thousands packed into the grandstand, with the American chants of USA! USA! drowning out the familiar European Ole! Ole ole ole! song.A brief video tribute to the late Arnold Palmer was played before the first group started as the partisan American crowd chanted I believe that we will win!The colorful gallery included a group wearing red, white and blue Team USA hockey jerseys with Viking horns in homage to the local NFL team. Two spectators wore large, pink cat masks in the front row.---Wesley Walker Womens Jersey .Y. -- Sabres forward Drew Stafford has witnessed plenty of turmoil during his eight seasons in Buffalo. This is the Dhaka term for a motorcade that is given high priority in traffic and the one that is about to pass through, the England cricket team convoy, is of the highest importance. It starts with an advanced team of police packed in pick-up trucks, followed by similar vehicles containing a Rapid Action Battalion and then the convoy starts with a long line with two buses in the middle. It is followed by more armed security men and women, a couple of minibuses, and then a fire brigade truck to round off.The convoy of about 10 to 12 different type of vehicles speeds through the emptied 8 km path from the Radisson hotel to the Shere Bangla National Stadium. The scene was similar in Chittagong where the roads at times were narrower than Dhakas. The most convenient location, of course, was the 20 yards the players walked to cross the road from the Chittagong hotel to the MA Aziz Stadium for Englands practice matches. But the longest the convoy had to travel was from their Dhaka hotel to the Fatullah Cricket Stadium which was 25km cutting right through Dhakas main artery from north to south. This was the scene for more than four weeks. Crowds waited patiently in front of every alleyway and street leading to the main road that connects the team hotel and stadium. It was inconvenient for hundreds of thousands of people, who were backlogged in various traffic jams linked to the convoys movement.Security was the most critical end of the bargain for England touring Bangladesh, and it was settled in mid-August when the ECB gave the go-ahead for the tour after a comprehensive security inspection****If the adjudicators of the man-of-the-series award took a wider view of events leading up to Englands tour of Bangladesh, Mehedi Hasan and Ben Stokes would have found competition coming from Reg Dickason, the ECBs director of security management. Although he says that it wasnt his job to convince the England players to tour Bangladesh, it was Dickasons iron-clad assurance that encouraged the ECB to give the green signalI didnt have to convince them, it wasnt my job Dickason told ESPNcricinfo. The awareness was heightened by the terrible attack on July 1. Where we travel throughout the world theres potential for such an attack as is shown in Germany, Belgium and France. Bangladesh was no different. From our point of view, it didnt really materially change the programme that we were going to put around the team.He said that Bangladeshs track record of delivering security as promised helped in building trust for Englands tour.History of previous performance definitely comes into play. Everyone is always well intentioned. I think what we have to establish is the ability of the organisers to do what they have said. A lot of trust came from the U-19 World Cup.The main purpose of the risk assessment for the Under-19 World Cup was to see if the event was safe to go ahead, and we deemed that it was. We came out here to see what the BCB and the government was actually going to provide. It went very well. They did everything they said they were going to do, said Dickason.Like most places in Dhaka after the July 1 terrorist attack in Gulshan, the BCB headquarters in Mirpur came under heightened security. The following month, Dickason, ECBs director of cricket operations John Carr and PCA chief executive David Leatherdale travelled to Bangladesh for the inspection. We met with the BCB and the local police, intelligence agencies, three overseas diplomatic missions and finally the Prime Minister. So based on what we were told and what we had witnessed in the U-19 World Cup, we had some degree of confidence we decided that this tour should go ahead and that was the recommendation, said Dickason. So on September 30, was Dickason nervous when the plane carrying the England players landed in Dhaka? I wasnt nervous but I am always concerned. I am conservative by nature. It is a fairly heavy responsibility with peoples safety. We got out just before the team. With the help of the BCB, we made sure things would be done exactly the way they said it would. It was done that way. In all of our tours we pplan for worst, hope for the best - thats the underlying methodology, he said.dddddddddddd****You can understand why a player might think the security issues would disrupt their focus. Its not that there is any apparent hole in the cordon; its more that you can never escape a reminder of the need for it. When they open their curtains in the morning, they see armed police preventing cars from approaching the hotel. When they open their hotel door, they have armed police patrolling the landing. If they look up at training, they see a marksman on the roof of every adjacent building. The hotels are very good, but some of the players have been here a month and they arent allowed out. At every moment you are reminded: there have been threats; there is an issue. Focusing all your concentration on the ball at such moments might well be difficult. The most remarkable aspect of this is the convoy. Every time the team (and accompanying media) need to go anywhere, the roads are cleared and closed, a cordon of several hundred police line the route to ensure pedestrians cannot approach and a convoy of buses, people carriers, fire trucks and heavily-armed swat teams drive as quickly as possible past bewildered - and presumably frustrated - onlookers. Thats not as easy as it sounds: some of the roads are poor and the speed bumps in these parts are viciously effective. So, in both Chittagong and Dhaka, there are moments when the convoy slows to a crawl. Those points on the journey are especially well patrolled by army and police personnel, with the swat team vehicles driving alongside the team bus to ensure that anyone trying to reach the players will have to go through them first. The most dangerous it ever felt was when an over-zealous driver has struggled to stop. With no seat belts in the van, it is fair to say he gave the Test Match Special team - and your ESPNcricinfo correspondent - a bit of a wake-up.Generally, though, it felt well organised and safe. And, once you try and venture out on your own (a 5kms journey took two hours in a taxi one night), you realise the benefits of the escort. England have been looked after exceptionally well.****Dickason observed that despite the heightened security provided in Bangladesh which he called gold standard, it would probably not be similar in other cricketing destinations.I dont think it is a one-size fits all. Risk tolerance in different countries varies. I have been in international sport for 20 years and the road closures in Dhaka and Chittagong and the government input is as good as I have ever seen.I dont know if this will be standard but it is certainly the gold standard at the moment. I dont know if it will be rolled out in tours in places where the perception of risk and the actual risk is a little bit lower, he said.England staying in Bangladesh for the full tour has been a major boost for the BCB. A visit from Sean Carroll, Cricket Australias head of security, last week was the first sign that Australia are actively thinking of visiting Bangladesh next August. We have been very happy with the level of security. Each country will have their list of criteria. Sean Carroll is a very competent chap in his field. He is having a close look at things and will make a recommendation to his board, said Dickason. What has also been encouraging is the sensitivity shown by the touring side to the sacrifices made by the people who get caught up the convoys movement. I think it is a sacrifice. We have probably inconvenienced them. Our players were very conscious of that, and we were always on time. If we were a minute late, it would inconvenience another hundred thousand people. The Bangladeshi people have been absolutely sensational, he said. There is little doubt that the tour basically saved Bangladesh from a long isolation of hosting international cricket. It would have deflated the general mood of the country further but now there is a bit more to look forward to. After all, they have just defeated England in a Test match. Even the unseasonal heat of November doesnt seem to bother anyone. ' ' '
