SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short says he is willing to play under the final year of his rookie contract if a long-term extension cant be reached before the end of training camp. Its not about the contract, the 2013 second-round pick said on Wednesday after reporting to training camp at Wofford College. I started up with this team and I love the Carolina Panthers. I love the organization. Hopefully, things will get done.Short, who tied Cincinnatis Geno Atkins for the most sacks (11) by a defensive tackle last season, is scheduled to make just over $1 million this season.Based on recent extensions by Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, the going rate for a player of Shorts caliber is $17.2 million a year. The Panthers are believed to be offering Short somewhere between $13 and $15 million a year.Short smiled when asked about the Cox and Wilkerson deals.Just to see those guys rewarded like that, its a blessing, he said. Those guys have been working hard. They deserved it. Im happy to see they got it.Asked if he considered himself along the same caliber as Cox and Wilkerson, Short said, Im working to that level.Short reported for a three-day minicamp in June and never hedged on reporting to training camp. He sat out two weeks of non-mandatory workouts, his only leverage in negotiations. Its a process, said Short, the first time hes discussed his situation since skipping organized team activities. Weve got to go through it. Im just here to play football now.Asked whether this put him in an uncomfortable situation, Short said: Uncomfortable? Its a good uncomfortable. You want to be in this position, but you also want to get things done. Its going to take time, and Im patient.A year ago, cornerback Josh Norman turned down a long-term extension when the Panthers didnt offer a deal to his liking. He said during training camp he was betting on himself.Norman made the Pro Bowl, then had the franchise tag placed on him when a deal couldnt be made after the Super Bowl. The Panthers later rescinded the tag, and Norman signed with the Washington Redskins.Short wouldnt go so far as to say he was betting on himself.Thats a whole different guy. Thats a whole different character, he said of Norman. I cant really put myself in his shoes and what he went through. Everybody is different. I wouldnt say. What is making the 2016 WNBA Finals a special one is the level of competition -- its off the charts. No longer shackled by the demands of having an Eastern and Western Conference representative in the best-of-five series -- for the first time, the WNBA seeded its top eight teams regardless of conference -- means the leagues two best teams, the defending champion Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks, are in the final. The Sparks, who hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, can dethrone visitin gMinnesota with a victory in Game 4 Sunday night at Staples Center. The Lynx will be desperate to force the series back to Minneapolis, while Los Angeles would love to wrap up its first championship since winning back-to-back WNBA titles in 2001 and 2002.Right now we have a mindset that is focused on playing well, playing together and getting wins, said Sparks forward and league MVP Nneka Ogwumike. Its not over till its over, obviously. But weve put ourselves in a great position, and want to take advantage of that opportunity.Lynx forward Maya Moore said it wont take much to tip the outcome toward either team.Every championship game, in the WNBA, each team has the chance to win. Its a league thats the most competitive in the world. The smallest details separate winning and losing. And in a series like this, (overlooking) small details can have explosive results.Despite the Sparks blowout win on Friday and the Lynxs lopsided victory on Tuesday, both teams are practically even in talent. You cant throw a bounce pass on the court without hitting a player on either roster who hasnt won an NCAA, WNBA, international league, FIBA or Olympic chammpionship.ddddddddddddWe saw it during the season; both teams play offense and defense very well, said Lynx center Sylvia Fowles. Thats something we can both tip our caps to. Its just a matter of coming out here and putting it together for 40 minutes each night. Both teams are very familiar with each other on a lot of levels, noted Sparks guard Kristi Toliver. I think there are no more secrets. Its just a matter of a will to win, and whose will is greater.Candace Parker had 24 points and nine rebounds and Ogwumike scored 21 points as Los Angeles rolled to a 92-75 home win on Friday to move within a victory of the title. Its exciting, said Parker. Were happy to be matched up with them in the finals, because in years past its been the Western Conference semifinals. Were excited to be in the position were in, and well see what happens tomorrow. But this also speaks to the womens game. Its evolving. I think the players of each generation have added another dimension to the game.Cheryl Reeve, who has coached Minnesota to its three WNBA titles, including 2015, was asked if this final series felt unlike any other for her.Statistically, yeah, thats absolutely the case, Reeve said. In some of the other finals weve played in, whether we won or lost, there was a glaring difference in the teams statistically. But this time you have a case that these were the best two teams.I cant say yet if this is a watershed mark for the womens game. But I think this is something we might look back on as the start of something.ok back on as the start of something. [url=http:
