The Chicago Cubs and president of baseball operations Theo Epstein have agreed to a five-year contract extension.Epsteins initial contract -- signed in 2011 as a five-year deal worth $18.5 million -- was set to expire at the end of this season, and his status was one of the few unanswered questions of the Cubs season so far.Its everything I could have asked for. There is no place Id rather be, Epstein told reporters Wednesday. Im thrilled this worked out.Epstein and Cubs owner Tom Ricketts first discussed the extension during spring training and then at various points during the summer.I told him I thought he was the best in the game at what he did, and he told me no matter what I paid him he wasnt going to leave Chicago, so we were off to a good start, Ricketts said. The time and energy to do it the right way has paid off with a team that should be successful for years to come. While terms of the deal were not disclosed,?Todays Knuckleball reported that it will pay Epstein a little less than $50 million over the five years, although incentives could take him over that number.I think its in the range, its competitive and where it should be for someone who I think is the best baseball executive in the game, Ricketts said.?The thing that Ive seen the last five years is how well he handles people, how well he chooses people for his [front office] team, how well he chooses players for his team. And his ability to judge character and put together the right human resources on the same team has been truly remarkable.?The National League Central champions are on pace to finish the season with the best record in baseball by a wide margin. They head into the postseason as a team without a glaring weakness: great offense, stellar defense, outstanding rotation, the best relief corps in baseball and a canny manager in Joe Maddon. The teams 100-and-counting wins this season marks the first the time club has broken the century mark since 1935.Epstein was a former front-office man for the Boston Red Sox,?becoming the youngest general manager in MLB history in 2002. He is widely credited with building the squads that won the 2004 and 2007 World Series.Epstein resigned from Boston in 2011 to become president of baseball operations for the Cubs. During Epsteins first three years at Wrigley, the team finished in last place in the NL Central. Last season, it advanced to the National League Championship Series as a wild-card team but was swept by the New York Mets.Epstein said this was a pretty easy negotiation because he wanted to stay in Chicago.I told [Ricketts] if we couldnt work out a contract it would get awkward, because I would still keep showing up to work as an employee at will ruining my leverage, Epstein said. The team also gave extensions to general manager Jed Hoyer and vice president of amateur scouting and player development Jason McLeod. The family of Bill McCartney says the former Colorado football coaching great was recently diagnosed with late-onset dementia and Alzheimers.Family members said in a statement that McCartney is still the same Coach Mac -- biking, golfing, supporting the Buffs and being an active member of his church. Therefore, the statement continued, We are making this public to ask for your understanding and patience as we know he frequently runs into fans, friends and former players. This is a frustrating and confusing disease, and if he appears disconnected or unknowing, please dont take it personally.McCartney, who turns 76 later this month, led the Buffaloes to their only national championship in 1990. Hes the winningest coach in Colorado history at 93-55-5 and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.Another member of that exclusive club is former Colorado star defender Alfred Williams, who played on that national championship team and later won two Super Bowl rings with the Denver Broncos. Now a radio broadcaster, Williams said that McCartneys illness was no secret to the Colorado football family, which has known about the situation for a couple of years. He said McCartney has told him of his short-term memory troubles in the past. But when it was reported today, it was also reported that it was getting worse. And I think that is a surprise to all of us because Mac has always been the strongest and most fit man that weve known, Williams said.Following his retirement from coaching, McCartney wentt to work full-time for Promise Keepers, a Christian organization he helped to create in 1990, to help enrich mens lives.dddddddddddd He remains active in its mission today.McCartneys outspoken beliefs about religion and on social issues made him a lightning rod for critics during his coaching career in Boulder.Coach Mac is a unique character in American history because I dont believe that youre going to find anybody that knows him that will agree with everything that he says. Yet, youll still have respect for him, Williams said.Williams said the only drill McCartney ran himself at CU was punt return because he felt it was so important. So, every day hed walk out with a yardstick and he would just stand there during the punt team practice and he would just say, `Stop! Everybody had to stop at once and then would just lay down the stick. If you were off by an inch, an inch and a-half, or a quarter-inch, hed reset you. It was just great, Williams said. And everybody knew he was serious about football. But he was more serious about his family and how the players were treated. He was a champion for every athlete at the University of Colorado.I just love the man, Williams added. I dont feel sorry for him, and I dont think that he would want that. If you talk to him, hed just tell you that this is just the next fight. This is the next game. This is the next opportunity to pull through. ' ' '
