MEMPHIS -- Coach David Fizdale launched the promotional campaign on Wednesday for Memphis Grizzlies power forward Zach Randolphs Sixth Man of the Year bid.It essentially started immediately after Fizdale revealed to reporters that Randolph, a two-time All-Star entering his 16th NBA season, would transition to a reserve role on a permanent basis during the final year of his contract with the Grizzlies.Zachs coming off the bench this year, Fizdale told reporters after practice Wednesday, a couple of days after JaMychal Green started the preseason opener instead of Randolph. Weve talked about it. Hes been incredible about the whole situation. Hes embracing that role. Like I told him, I said, Most likely, no ones going to pay you to be a starter from here on out, so lets audition you for what youre going to be for the rest of your career. And it really clicked with him. Were going to go after Sixth Man of the Year. I want to highlight the hell out of him in that second unit. I need him to be a leader in that second unit, and hes really embraced that.Randolph, 35, came off the bench in 15 of the 68 games he played last season under former Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger. Randolph averaged 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season, down a bit from his career averages of 17.0 points and 9.4 rebounds.Randolph, a major factor in Memphis six consecutive playoff appearances, said he has no issue with his new role.I feel like I can be a starter, of course, and carry a team like I did last year, Randolph said. But Im being positive and staying ready. If Coach wants me to play 10 minutes, Ill come in and play the hardest 10 minutes.Randolph said ?he appreciated Fizdales direct approach in explaining the decision to him.Fizdale, a longtime assistant with the Miami Heat before being hired by the Grizzlies, has made playing at a faster pace an emphasis in Memphis. Its difficult to do that if the 6-foot-9, 260-pound Randolph and 7-foot-1, 255-pound center Marc Gasol continue to be paired together consistently.Lets not dance around it and act like its not there, Fizdale said. Playing Marc and Zach together is not a formula for pace, so why even mess around with it? And thats why I went directly to [Randolph]. And Im not saying I wont play them together throughout the year, because some of these teams are so bruising that, yeah, there will be moments throughout the game that I have to match up both of my big guys against theirs. But to start the game, going into games, were going to make sure that our pace and our speed is at the right level that it needs to be at to play our style of play. But at the same time, Zach has an extremely valuable role on this team scoring off the bench. Everybodys talked about that in the offseason: What kind of second unit do they have? They cant score. Well, guess what? We can score now. Weve got a legitimate, bona fide scorer in that second unit with Zach Randolph. Yeezy Wholesale Authentic . COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- There was no celebration after the game for Earthquakes interim coach Mark Watson. San Joses players prefer waiting for something a bit bigger. Sam Cronin scored the winning goal in the 52nd minute and the Earthquakes beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night to give Watson his first win. "Well wait for something bigger, like a playoff win, but there will be one," San Jose midfielder Chris Wondolowski said. But there were some fireworks between Watson and Rapids coach Oscar Pareja as the two walked off the field following a testy game that featured a red-card ejection. "It wasnt the prettiest game," said Watson. "But the results were good." Neither coach would discuss their postgame conversation, but Pareja wouldnt deny that it had something to do with the red card to Rapids leading scorer Atiba Harris in the 18th minute. "Well keep it between us," said Watson. Colorado played the final 72 minutes without Harris, who was ejected for sliding into Alan Gordon. Gordon was on the ground when Harris slid into his right leg. "Ill have to look at the film before commenting on the play," Pareja said. "I can say we were frustrated by our play in the first half, but played better a man down in the second half." Steven Lenhart scored his first goal of the season in the 11th minute to give San Jose a 1-0 lead, ending a two-match scoreless drought. The Earthquakes, shut out in their last two games, had scored only 13 goals in their first 15 games this season. Watson replaced Frank Yallop after San Joses 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on June 1.dddddddddddd The Earthquakes (4-6-6) had only one win in their previous 11 matches and were 0-5-2 on the road under Yallop. "He did a great job coming in here and commanding our locker room," Wondolowski said. "It was a bit similar to the way it was, but it was a great mix." Nathan Sturgis scored in the 67th for Colorado (5-5-5), which snapped a six-match unbeaten streak. The Rapids were 3-0-3 in that span. Neither team had a shot on goal before Lenhart outraced the defence for the ball a few strides past midfield. He drilled the ball from just outside the box into the upper right corner of the net past Clint Irwin to make it 1-0. The Rapids had their first scoring chance in the 30th minute when Dillon Powers put a shot into the breadbasket of Busch for a save. Deshorn Brown had a follow up shot, but sailed a header over the crossbar. Cronin extended the lead with his second goal of the season, picking up a loose ball and eluding Irwin as he came out beyond the penalty box then firing the ball into the back of the net. Irwin later stopped Lenhart from in close, Colorado regained possession and Brian Mullans cross set up Sturgis goal. Lenhart had a second goal waved off by an off-sides call in the 85th minute. San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch caught a shot by Edson Buddle with a minute left. "Our play changed in the second half," Watson said. "We didnt have to take the game to them. They had to take the game to us." ' ' '
