The Minnesota Vikings learned the hard way earlier this month about the Detroit Lions late-game prowess. The Vikings would prefer to give themselves a little more elbow room in the rematch on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit. The Lions stole a win in Minnesota on Nov. 6 after the Vikings took the lead with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. A 58-yard Matt Prater field goal sent the game into overtime, and Detroit completed the comeback with a 28-yard Matthew Stafford-to-Golden Tate pass play. That 22-16 overtime victory is the reason why the NFC North teams are tied for first place at 6-4. Detroit has staged a fourth-quarter comeback in all of its wins.Every one of their games theyve played have been seven points or less, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. I think theyve done a great job at the end of ballgames, including the one we played. The biggest thing is once you start winning, you develop confidence and thats what theyve done at the end of ballgames. The Lions have also learned how to win in their annual Thankgiving Day game after nearly a decade of futility. They have a three-game winning streak on the holiday following a nine-game losing streak. Its a division game at our place on Thanksgiving, said Stafford, whose team has won five of its last six games. Theres no getting around it. I expect it to be an awesome atmosphere and both teams playing at a high level.Neither team expects many surprises, considering they played each other so recently and have a short week to prepare. From a game-planning standpoint, at least youre familiar, Stafford said. Theyre fresh in your mind from just a couple of weeks ago. It doesnt diminish the challenge the Minnesota Vikings give us. Theyre a really good defense, a really good team, really well coached. Well have our hands full but as far as a preparation standpoint, it doesnt seem too long ago I was looking at film of these guys anyways.Norv Turner resigned as Minnesotas offensive coordinator just before the first meeting and was replaced by tight ends coach Pat Shurmur. Though Shurmur has now had time to settle into the role, Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford said the offense has simply been tweaked. Were still the same team, Bradford said. I dont think its been that drastic. I dont think Detroits going to look at the film and say, Thats a completely different group. Our guys are just a little more familiar with some of the things Pat has put in the past couple weeks. The Vikings offense only generated three second-half points against Arizona on Sunday but Minnesota still snapped a four-game losing streak. The Vikings recorded a defensive touchdown and another on Cordarrelle Pattersons 104-yard kickoff return in the 30-24 victory. They still rank at the bottom of the league in yards per game.Theres a lot of room for improvement, Bradford said of the offense. Weve got to be better in the second half but there were some positives. Just to get a win does a lot for this team and does a lot for this group. Hopefully, its something we can build on going forward.Minnesotas best offensive weapon is wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who has 40 receptions over the last four games. He caught 13 passes for 80 yards against Detroit.Any time you have somebody catching that many balls, thats a pretty good outing, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. Hes a talented guy. I know one thing, if you let him catch too many, at some point in time, hes going to burn you because hes explosive as well. The Lions also scored defensive and special teams touchdowns in their 26-19 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday. Stafford didnt throw a touchdown pass and the running game generated only 14 yards. The Lions also had two fumbles after losing just one fumble in their previous nine games. The good thing about playing on a Thursday is you get to go out there and quickly redeem yourself, Stafford said. The last time the teams met on Thanksgiving Day was 1995, when the Lions pulled out a wild 44-38 victory. Thatcher Szalay . It might not have mattered. While the Dodgers are preparing for the playoffs, the Padres showed their future has promise behind two rookies. Brett Brackett . Fred Couples, captain of the U.S. side, put it all into perspective. Both players have lower body injuries that will keep them out of the lineup until at least January 31, which is the first game they can be activated from IR. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas starter Derek Holland surpassed just about everyones expectations in his first start since returning from the disabled list earlier this week. Not his own.Holland (5-6) allowed one run on four hits in six innings in a 3-0 loss to Cincinnati Tuesday. Hell be looking to build off that outing Sunday when he faces off opposite Danny Salazar (11-5) and the Cleveland Indians as the Rangers look to take 3-of-4 from the Tribe.Holland, who missed more than two months because of left shoulder inflammation, is trying to keep the momentum from that start going.Im always trying to do that every time I go out, Holland said of his first start. But Im past that. Ive got to focus on whats next, now its Cleveland. Theyre a hot team. Theyre in first place as well. All the Cincinnati start did for Holland was prove that he was over the shoulder issues that contributed to his slow start this season. He felt fine physically in his three rehab starts, but the having the success at the big-league level let Holland know hes where he wants to be with his pitching. Its one good start, Holland said. My goal is to be consistent all the time. Its not after one start we throw a parade because I did good or whatever. I want to continue to do that each start and just feed off of that.Holland was pleased with his efficiency in the start (73 pitches in six innings) and his slider. Holland had gotten away from throwing his slider earlier in the year, buut established it early in his five-strikeout start.ddddddddddddEverythings there, he said. Its where it needs to be. I feel very confident and very happy with where Im at.Facing Cleveland has been good for Holland in the past. The Ohio native is 4-1 lifetime against Cleveland with a 2.74 ERA. He beat the Indians earlier this year, pitching six innings and allowing one run in a 9-2 win in May.While Holland comes into Sundays game with confidence, Salazar has been scuffling. Despite impressive numbers on the season as a whole, the right-hander has struggled mightily over his last four starts.Salazar is 0-2 in that span with a 15.55 ERA. In his last two starts, hes totaled just five innings and has been tagged for nine earned runs.Despite the stretch, Cleveland manager Terry Francona is confident Salazar can get things turned around given his track record. Over the last two seasons, Salazar is 25-15.His last two starts, everybody has those, Francona said. When things like that happen, Mickey (Callaway), our pitching coach, they make sure they have a good solid side day, they pay attention to detail, because that stuff is the fastest way to find your footing again. It doesnt always come back in one lump, but if you have a good solid work week, it generally gives you the best chance on your day to start to succeed. ' ' '
