PITTSBURGH -- The former nanny of Pittsburgh Penguins player Chris Kunitz was sentenced Tuesday to five years in federal prison for setting fire to her rental residence and then filing fraudulent insurance claims for the contents. The public defender for Andrea Forsythe, 28, unsuccessfully sought a term running concurrently to one shell receive next month for thefts from the Penguins player and other people for whom she worked as a nanny. She also was ordered to pay more than $179,000 restitution to the insurance companies that covered her losses in the June 23, 2014 fire in Sturgeon. In the other cases, Forsythe was convicted of numerous crimes and will be sentenced Jan. 3 by a judge in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court. Prosecutors say she stole $12,000 diamond earrings from Kunitzs home in 2013 and sold them to jewelry stores. The earrings were a birthday present for Kunitzs wife, Maureen. The theft charges filed by police in Collier Township, where Kunitz lives with his wife and their children, grew out of the arson and insurance fraud investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives into the Sturgeon fire.Forsythe pleaded guilty in July to federal charges of malicious destruction of property by fire and wire fraud for burning the house, then filing fraudulent insurance claims for the contents, including some jewels she had allegedly stolen from another couple while also working as a nanny. The other couple told investigators that an 18-karat gold diamond necklace worth about $4,400 and a gold diamond stud earring worth more than $10,000 had been stolen from them. Appraisals of those jewels were then used by Forsythe to make the fraudulent insurance claims, federal authorities contend. As that investigation progressed, Forsythe eventually confessed to stealing the earrings from Maureen Kunitz. They were appraised at $11,900 when Kunitz bought them for his wifes birthday sometime before she noticed them missing in September 2013.Forsythe acknowledged stealing the diamond earrings from Maureen Kunitzs bedroom while the couple wasnt home, the Collier Township police complaint said. Forsythe then sold a loose diamond from one earring to a jewelry store for $2,542 and the other earring to a precious metals and jewelry store for $1,408.50.Forsythes federal public defender, Jay Finkelstein, in court documents blamed the thefts on Forsythes allegedly abusive home life as a child. Finkelstein has a blanket policy of not commenting to the media.U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon refused Finkelsteins request to allow Forsythes federal sentence to run concurrently to whatever sentence she receives next month saying the theft victims deserve their own justice, so to speak, and the court will not intervene here. However, the county judge could still order that sentence to run concurrent to the federal sentence. If that happens, Forsythe would get credit for serving both terms simultaneously, instead of serving them one after the other.Forsythes public defender in the Allegheny County theft case didnt immediately return a call for comment Tuesday.---This story has been corrected to say earrings were sold to jewelry stores rather than jury stores. RIO DE JANEIRO -- In her Olympic debut, Sopita Tanasan came away with gold. The Thailand native won the womens 48-kilogram category Saturday in the first weightlifting event at the Rio de Janeiro Games.Tanasan snatched 92 kilograms and lifted 108 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 200 kilograms. It was her first time competing on the world level at that weight class. On her first lift in clean and jerk, Tanasan easily succeeded at 106 kilos to take the lead. She lifted 108 kilos on her second attempt, but failed at 110 kilos on her final try.In a last-ditch bid to snatch the gold, Sri Wahuni Agustiani of Indonesia twice tried to lift 115 kilos to overtake Tanasan. She failed on the first try and Tanasan celebrated by hugging her coaches in the green room.I didnt know what to think, Tanasan said. I didnt think she would be able to lift it.Agustiani was able to lift the bar on her second attempt and her coaches screamed in celebration, but she couldnt jerk the weight. She said shes lifted 118 kilos before in practice and thought shed maybe pull it off for the gold.It just wasnt meant to be, she said.Agustiani won silver and Hiromi Miyake of Japan took bronze.Morghan King failed to end the United States 16-year streak of not medaling in the 48kg category, finishing sixth. Tara Nott was the last American to medal, winning gold in 2000. Still, King sent an American record. Her lift of 83 kilos in the snatch broke the U.S. record of 82.5, which had been set by Nott in Sydney. King added 100 kilos in the clean and jerk for a total of 183 kilos. The snatch was something Ive been working on for a long time. The cleaan and jerk, I knew it was going to be a lot tougher.dddddddddddd But, Im happy, King said. I still have to pinch myself that I was out there. You are in the moment and focusing on your lift, then just trying to do your best, and then its all over. Its kind of surreal. The event became somewhat wide open after the sudden withdrawal of favorite Hou Zhihui of China. Predicted by many to win the gold, the 19-year-old left Rio with what was described as a knee injury. But there was speculation that the injury -- whatever its severity -- helped China decide to replace her on the team with over-75kg lifter Meng Suping. With the Russian weightlifters banned from participating, Meng became a favorite in the heavier division. So with Hou out of the way, the competition became a crapshoot that Tanasan quickly took control of as the last lifter in the snatch division. She easily lifted 88 kilos on her first attempt -- best of the round -- and then bettered her mark twice to 90 kilos then 92 kilos.Thi Huyen Vuong of Vietnam failed to advance past the snatch round after three unsuccessful attempts at 83 kilos and 84 kilos. It trimmed the field to 11 lifters vying for the medal, all chasing Tanasan. The 22-year-old Tanasan dropped down from the 53kg class to make her Olympic debut. She lifted 195 kilos to win the junior world championships in that class in 2014, and she was fourth overall at the world championships last year after lifting 210 kgs.No previous data was available for Tanasan in the 48kg class.
